Here is a noob question.

On the gs is there a place to lock your helmet?  Or do you just have to take it with you everywhere?

If you take it with you everywhere then everybody will know you're a cool motorcycle rider. Makes it easier to score that way.

Or more seriously, yes the GS500 does have a helmet lock.
Actually it has 2 of them, under the seat.

Lift the seat and you'll see a metal hook on each side of the subframe about 1/2 way back along the seat.
Just hook one of these through the metal loop on your helmet strap then put the seat back in place to lock it.

I've used this quite a lot, but never realy felt it to be secure enough for leaving the bike long.

does it actually "lock" the helmet or can someone still steal it?

Anyone ever heard of a strap being cut?  Not me...but...anyone else?  :dunno:

weaselnoze

theres not much room to cut. besides if they had any brains, they would realize it would be useless if the strap was cut

RIP RICH! We'll miss you buddy!

I got my brand new Shoei RF-1000 stolen off my GS500F last summer. They cut the strap. Contrary to what a lot of people think, you can get a helmet restrapped. I always take my helmet with me everywhere I go now. I am getting a cable lock this summer for my bike so I'll feel more safe locking the helmet with the cable through the visor hole.

I've also seen a gs500 for sale that had a bent seat lock system.  Someone bent their seat up to get the helmet off

davipu

well if you are all worried about it I can make stainless steel cable locks for about 10 a piece (just a rough estimate)

conflicttheorist

what are we locking the helmets to?
I came here to kick @$$ or chew bubblegum...and it looks like I'm all out of bubblegum.

That happened to me once.  The guy pull/pried the seat up enough to unhook my helmet, bending the seat locking mechanism in the process[1].  No tools (e.g., screwdriver, crow bar) were used since the side fairing was not damaged--just bare hands (he must have been strong[2]).

Cheers,
e.

[1] I disassembled the locking mechanism and bent things back and it is working better than before.

[2] It was a Shoei, so maybe he really wanted it.  But it was an 8 years old entry level Shoei (RF-R) with smelly lining, scratched lenses and frayed strap.  Boy, did he want it.
