Out for a lovely sunday ride and on the way back home I went down pretty hard.  going around a curve (right hand).  got started into curve and then for some reason I target fixed on the double yellow.  Then the thought went through my head " I'm not gonna make this turn".  Put it upright (thank you MSF) and slammed on the brakes.  I don't really know what happened at this point because it happened so fast. Rear wheel locked and that is all I can really remember.  I think as I was coming out of the lean I think I  just flopoped it right over onto the left.  All damage is on left side including me.  Went off road into ditch (thank gode not guard rail.  biked stopped about 8 feet down from road (pretty steep dropoff)  and I continued another 10 -15 feet down and ended up at the bottom of the rocky ditch (I think i somehow  missed all of the trees.  Pretty foggy still, I used a steel wire that was embedded in the ground to climb out of the ditch and stood on the side of the road and waited for my riding partner (he was in front of me) to turn back.  Not too much damage to me.  A sore elbow (left), sore big toe (left), a little bump on my head, and the expected soreness all over.  Bike is still rideable, but left turn signal is busted(front), speedo is trashed as is the instrument cluster, clutch is bent down (the whole part where the clutch attaches, clutch lever is fine), scrapes on left side of tank and engine cover, and knocked off my left mirror (mirror is fine but the mounting point is broke).  Brand new saddlebag on the left hand side is trashed.  I'm OK and the bike will ride again, so all is good.

see below for photos of gear, will post photos of bike and accident scene when I get those pictures from my friend.  When he came back to pick me and the bike back up he was nice enough to bring a camera.

I was wearing full gear of course.  fieldsheer jacket and pants.

Helmet has a few scratches and the visor was ripped off.  We never found the visor.  I'm not gonna use this helmet again though, just to be on the safe side.




Gear has no tears and are just dirty.  I'm very happy with the way they held up.



boot also had a scuff at the big toe.  Cheep black walmart work boats that lace to the middle of my calf.

and for sure replace that helmet...a crashed helmet is a bad helmet...

that sucks, glad you came through ok.  

get it back running and go practice that same corner as quick as you can! I bet you'll never drop it through that turn again!  

When I heard it I almost fell out of my chair, enjoy!

dang...glad you're all right...so you're thinking when you stood the bike up you did it with too much force and ended up going down on the opposite side or...?

That's the most likely scenario - a bit of overcorrection coupled with a locked rear wheel = lowside.

It's totally anti-intuitive (I certainly don't have the right reflex "built in" yet) but next time try to throttle UP a little ... and push harder on that handlebar! ... and you can make the curve at the same (or even higher) speed.

Correct me if I'm wrong Pablo (or one of you real-life racers out there).

I went down on what would be called the high side.  I was turning right, but ended up landing on the left side.  But I think right after I stood it up I flopped it on the left.  I don't really remember much about the crash after I stood it up and locked the rear..

Yeah I know I would have made the turn, but I just fixed on the yellow line and then thought I wasn't gonna make it.

I know that panicky feeling only too well!  I'm glad things worked out as well as they did for you.

might i suggest you sign and date your helmet
and hang it on the wall

I was thinking more of a clear plexi box.  Like one of those trophy footballs or baseballs.  I could also frame the accident report and put it with it.  

The cops came and filed a county report, but no state report.  That means it will never get back to my insurance, so my rates are safe.  I also didn't get a ticket, which I hear in some states are often issued for wreckless driving or something.

I'm also glad you're OK.

I didn't crash yesterday but I did lay a nice long black stripe with my rear tire yesterday at the intersection of 1st and Seneca in Seattle...if any Seattlites are in the area you might want to look for my handiwork.  I'm pretty proud of it if you hadn't noticed. :mrgreen:

If any on you have ever driven down 1st Ave. you can attest that it is quite possibly one of the most distracting streets in Seattle, especially on a sunny days.
