Need Help with broken tachometer please

OK guys..... well yesterday my tach went out, so I pulled over and started giving it a look over.  Instantaneously realized the tach cable wan't connected to the cylinder head anymore.  So I got out my pliers and got it back and connected again, tach worked again and thought it was the end of it.  Wrong  :roll:

So this evening (400 or so miles later) the tach goes out again as I'm less than a mile from home.   disconnect the cable at both the tach and the cylinder head and test it, cable is good. Look inside the engine and... DOH!

The little nubbin in there (I think its called a tach driven gear?) has been worn down, got some metal shavings in there.  Guess I didn't slot it right.

Is this the right thing im looking for? a tach driven gear?  (#16 in the schematic http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.com/PartsBandit/Assets/schematics/Suzuki/SU0084_003.gif )

Is this an easy thing to replace or will this require the use of some serious tools and or expertise?

That would appear to be it, yes. Love the GS and the forum.

Not tough to replace. I think all you have to do is remove one screw and the assembly pulls out. I would have to look at a head to confirm this.

btw....if you want one, I have several of them since I use electronic tachs. I remove them from the heads and plug the hole. Pay shipping and it is yours.
Common sense in not very common.

A good tip to stop the cable bezels from loosening off is to put a turn or two of PTFE tape around the threads on the tacho case and the engine take off, then finger tighten them.
