ok i cant figure out what this problem is but it got worse when my bike was layed down at a stop light. it didnt do anything but scratch my peg because i layed it down as soft as I could.

downtown they have been doing road work and they didnt have a merge sign and i was going and around the corner was a pothole about 2 feet deep and about 2 feet wide!!!!!!! and around it was covered in gravel so I hit the brakes with my first reaction and i couldnt go right because of the @$$hole cars so the bike stopped then slid out. I HATE the way people just forget that people ride motorcycles and leave a f%&ked up hole like that in the road i mean what if i hit it and flew forward and got run over by a car.

anyways so my bike just seemed to be a lil diff. so i checked the tire nothing wrong, nothing bent. so i take about a 30 min ride to the harley/buell dealer to drool for a bit. on the way back the bike starts making a swooshing noise like somthing is rubbing or slightly knocking real fast and i know its not the motor and its not the wheels or tire because there is no vibrations or wobbles from those points, so now im back in the city and its louder when i slow down it goes , CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK and they are longer clunks untill I stop the motor makes no noise it seems to be coming from the drivetrain.   it engages and disengages fine but this noise is pissing me off. what is it!!????

Kinda sounds like the rear axle may have shifted slightly, causing the chaind to rub against the side of the sprocket(s). If so, I would expect the bike to drift, however slightly, to one side or the other. Anybody else? Love the Baby G and the forum.

ok so ive got the bike on the stand and it looks like it jams up at the same exact point every time. so i dont think this has anything to do with the tranny, I checked the marks on the axel on each side and they are perfectly inline. so im not sure whats going on yet thanks for the input though so far

Hmmm?

What side did you lay the bike down on?

Is the GS on the center stand?
Is the motor running and in/out of gear?

We need a little more specific information on what you mean by "jams up".

Are you turning the bike over with the starter and it stops turning?

Stay cool. There's enough experience here to help you diagnose this problem.  8)

ok its really weird, it looks like cernunos was right, the axle looks like it shifted slightly back = though so thats why its weird. anyways the chain was too tight. and was jamming at a point ... so it was making the noise because the sprocket was basically having to pull that tension across it. im AMAZED it didnt break!!!. the chain is old too and i really think its time for a change. I also took the casing off of the left side that covers the sprocket. there was some crap in it dirt and gravel and leaves i was like WTF. so I cleaned that all out. now it shifts alot better and I adjusted the axle back to where its supposed to be. the bike is like a woman , amazing to deal with some days , but a real B*TCH others.

thanks for the help though. im glad it wasnt anything major

You may want to check the sprocket for "hooking"...the sprocket teeth should not be real sharp and there should be no grooving in the teeth where the chain pulls. Pull on the chain straight back from the back and the chain should not move more than about 1/16-1/8 inch. Glad yer back on the road Jah. Now hug that little cantankerous 500 and keep lovin' this forum.

both sprockets have a little bit of wear I think I should replace both of them at some point.
