Hey all,

I'm getting tired of my endless engine rebuild project.  I think I'd rather just throw a new engine in.  Does anyone have any idea as to how much a working replacement engine would cost?  Anyone know of a supplier that has new or used negines available?

From what Ive observed in my GS owning the last 3 years is that engines are hard to come by.  What exactly is wrong with yours.

i purchased a replacement engine for my 93 for $700 last spring.  i bought it from a motorcycle salvage yard that i found online...the engine runs well enough, but the guy told me it was a '99 engine.  i later found out it's a 93 (when i went to replace the fron sprocket with a 99 sprocket, it didn't fit),  :guns: so it probably has more miles on it than i care to guess.  the moral is make sure you see the bike the engine comes out of.  the frames have the vin #'s on them, so you can determine the year, but i couldn't figure out a way to determine the year from the serial numbers on the engine.  good luck :thumb:

If you can find one, they will cost around $200 and up. Salvage yards will usually screw you on price. Some times the best deal is buying a wrecked bike for the motor and parting out the what is left.

Whenever I get hold of a crank, I will be putting one up for sale.

My engine had a connecting rod bearing go bad about 2 years ago.  I stripped the engine down, replaced the connecting tods, bearings, had falicon rebuild the crank shaft, new gaskets, piston rings,  etc.  The bike is back together but I still cant get the damn thing to crank.  Some sort of compression problem, but whatever.  We were looking at it this weekend and my buddy dropped a washer in the engine cavity.  It landed too deep to fish out.  I'm going to have to split the crank case again to get it out, and that is more effort than I want to put into this thing.  I just want to get it to work so my brother or dad can ride it.

Anyways, I called a salvage yard in my area and they said that they have a 99' engine that works with about 4k miles on it.  They quoted me $650 for it.   I imagine that I could talk them down a bit on that price.

Does this sound like a decent deal?  Anyone got any idea what I can get for the parts of my existing engine?

Compression problem? Have you checked the valves? Lack of compression is usually a valve issue of not seating or bent. A quick way to check is to shine a flash light through the spark plug hole, look into the exhaust and intake ports for any light shining past the valves as you rotate the motor.

$650 for a motor? OUCH! I must have a fortune in parts.

Yeah, I checked all of the obvious things that could be causing the compression problem.  the timing is right, the valves are good.  I took the head and piston sleeves off this weekend to see if the piston rings were misaligned or something that might be losing compression.   That's when my buddy dropped the washer in the engine cavity.

I'm sick of tinkering with this engine though.  I just want to get this bike running or sold.  So if anyone is interested in a 2002 in great shape (at least visually), let me know... or if you have a working engine to sell... let me know.

LMAO..

This reminds me of ME a year ago...

Check your valves..my timing was ok too, but somehow i had bent them.

Pull off the head and pour water in, and see if the valves leak. Its not hard, and frankly, i would rather do that than pull off the motor... and put on another one... uggh... just pull the head.

Its fun when it works... when its not running its frustrating, but dont give up.

Take it as a yield sign, not a stop sign. :thumb:
