I want to get an EXO-400 cheap!  There isn't anyplace around me to get one so I thought I'd ask where I can order one cheap.

Cant help on your shoping, but my buddy just picked up one yesterday.
I have to say, I am very surprised by the fit and finish!! It has tons of features, and seems very well constructed.
My buddy only paid around $140 for it. And its even Snell certified!!!

April edition of "Rider" magazine did a review of helmets, and of the ones they looked at the Scorpion EXO-700 got very good reviews....on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the best, they gave it a 2 for ventilation, a 1 for shield changing and a 2 for noise control.  That was the same rating they gave the Shoei TZ-R Traveler, which cost $200 more!  They both had better ratings then the Arai Quantum II.  I own an Arai Quantum F and would certainly look at the Scorpoin in I needed a new helmet.

Some of the difference in price can be explained by noting that the Scorpion uses a polycarbonate shell while Shoei's use fiberglass or kevlar laminated shells.  I prefer the latter for those occasions when my head is skidding across the pavement for an extended period of time/distance.

Have you tried one on to know what size you need?  If you mail order it and the size is wrong you will have to pay return freight a most likely freight back to you with the new size.

If you like the helmet spend the money.

Oh please, not that worn out phrase again.  The $500+ helmet folks really have you hooked.  If it passes DOT and Snell it's a fine helmet.  Unless you wear something with so much fluffy foam that it sticks out a foot from your head, I don't think you're going to get much better protection from anything else.  You'd need a helmet 3 feet in diameter to completely protect your head from the sudden stop.  You DO realize that is how they test them right?  How many Gs for how long when dropped.  Even so, it's MUCH better than those who don't wear anything right?

Sorry tkm433, don't mean to rag on you but show me some numbers where expensive helmets save more lives and I'll rethink my position.

I chose to save some money going with the polycarbinate and a solid color.  The fiberglass/kevlar is a bit lighter but hey, I'm tough, I can handle a few extra ounces.

They seem to be sized the same as the HJC helmets so I'll try one of those on and order the same size.

I hear the Scorpions are made by a group of guys who left Shoei or Arai and decided to make a great helmet at a reasonable cost without the $300+ markup.

The rating was for the EXO 700, not the EXO 400.....anyone know what the difference is?

Rag all you want!  I guess I started it by my commet but I think your use of the word " cheap " got me started and sitting at home with the flu or something else.

I just hate it when I hear or see a post using the word "cheap" and it refers to helmets, riding gear, and tires.  

As for you wanting to save another $20.00 or so I have no problem with that but I have found that less expensive helmets tend to not fit as well due to less sizes being offered and they tend to be not as quit at speed.  

You may be correct as to all helmets going through the same test to get certified but and I do not know for sure I would guess the test is looking at the g force for one hit.  I feel and yes I could be wrong but I would trust a more expensive helmet to be made of better material that might hold up in a real world crash not a crash in the lab on a work bench.  I want my helmet to be still in one piece after the main impact of the crash and the remaining hits that might happen before I come to a stop. Helmets are only good or designed for one crash and should be replaced after a crash but how often does ones head hit something in a singel crash?

Now ask your self this question: Would you want to be in a auto crash in a Mercedes or a Kia?  As far as I know both brands sold in the USA meet the US Government Saftey Standards.

Have a good one and the major plus here is that you want to wear a helmet so I guess  is better than none.

OK, I should say inexpensive...  Better?  I've seen a lot of reviews all saying these helmets are equivilent to those costing twice as much.


Rashad - I'm a cheap bastard, I admit it.  Hey, $5 is lunch.  

Maybe that is why I retired (well I work part time 15 hours a week because I need to get out of the house) at 42.  If you subscribe to the lifestyle that the marketers are pushing (buy buy buy, get it NOW, buy it on credit, low payments) you'll NEVER get to really retire.  50% of americans have a net worth of zero.  That's right, they have a zero balance.  They may own a lot of things but they owe just as much.  How many live paycheck to paycheck?  Take out loans for a vacation?  Why?  Because they think "what's $5", big deal.  Well it adds up.  Quite quickly.  But, so does saving.  Start small and slow and before you know it the bank is paying YOU hundreds even thousands a month.  It's nice to get "free" money.  Try it.

I agree with tkm433, the words 'cheap' and 'safety equipment" should never be in the same sentance.. likewise tires, brakes, baby seats for cars, etc....  There are just some things you shouldn't cheap out on.

That being said, I have no idea of the quality of the helmet you are wanting, nor do I believe that price is the best method of determining how well built a helmet (or anything else ) is made. Safety tests are not exactly real world, but better than nothing.
Too bad they don't publish the actual test results, instead of just letting know wether it passed of failed.... :dunno:
