Well Im working on setting up a nice system in my truck. i was wondering if i were to purcahse a laptop monitor off ebay, or wherever, is there a way to use the AV inputs from my PS2 with the laptop connections? Maybe some soldering or something to splice in. I can rig the power, that isnt a problem. i just need to know if i can use standard AV cables to produce the needed input to the screen. Thanks ahead of time!

I don't think you can just hook up the A/V outs from your PS2 to the LCD screen.  You'd have to have some type of interface card.  It might be easier to use something like this.    Kinda small though...

Well i planned on wiring up some sort of adapter, on some sort of board. I was hoping I could just cut some AV adapters appart and solder wire to wire, but it doesnt seem like that will work. So my plan so far is to get power to the monitor (not hard), then get a spare set of AV cables and cut em up, and start touchin em to the board in different places and hope I get a picture.

Laptop monitors have proprietary interfaces to their motherboards. You'd probably have a better chance of using a standard LCD display for a desktop computer. Either way, it's gonna be a hack job and messy for sure. Why don't you look into solutions from real car audio/video companies? It's probably gonna be more than you want to spend, but think about how much cleaner it's gonna be and how little time you'll have to put into it.

Well all of its goin into a fiberglass center console im makin, I just didnt wanna shell out the cash for an LCD display. I may buy a small LCD tv or a monitor that has svideo capabilities or something. I really wanna use this one though :(.

Svideo won't work either.  If you have a composite out you need a display that has guts to take a composite signal, decode it, and display it.  Whatever your PS2 outputs you need a monitor with compatable input.

All the formats are different and need to be matched.  Composite to composite, component to component, RGB to RGB, DVI to DVI, etc.

You can't just connect the video output to the leads of the display matrix.

As the others said, you'd be better off buying something.

Ditto to everything above when it comes to laptop screens.

On the other hand.....a buddy of mine bought a couple of self contained video games at a hamfest after seeing that the display takes NTSC video (that's regular video for the USA - not HDTV). He uses the display for his motor home camera.

No, I don't know the brand, but may see him in a couple of weeks.

Well i managed to find an adapter to go from video to vga, so I can get a nice cheap flatscreen (cheaper than a car audio monitor) and run it that way, woohoo. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Hmmm. Sounds more like something that you could use to input a camera into and drive a VGA monitor, not a laptop.  You could possibly discover a video pcmcia card for the laptop that takes video, uses some software and then displays on the screen.

Yes, a link would be nice to make sure your hard earned cash isn't squandered. On the other hand, if someone else is paying for it...CHARGE!

The site says that's a VGA to video converter, will it work backwards, ie video to VGA?  Cause that's what you need.

chinox22x

hmm..i don't think that will work.  your going IN into the adapter and not Out.

you'll need some sort of adapter to link it to any vga screen.  Either that or a small LCD tv with coax connection.  You can then buy the RF cable for your ps2 and that would be the easiest way to go.  Otherwise if you plan on using the A/V cables with your PS2,  you'll need a separate adaptor that  usually come in big sizes like this one

http://www.impactacoustics.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=1001&sku=40227&engine=overture&keyword=%28vga+to+s+video%29

the easiest way is to buy an RF cable for the ps2, about 15$ and then buy an LCD tv with a coax connection.  No wiring involved =)

here's another one

http://www.tisinc99.com/tisinc99/pl2vgaad.html

this will have any A/V cable input and then out to a VGA screen.  Like i said..they're kinda big and they require a power supply.  I've used a lot of vga converters but yet to find one that require a power supply, ie, plug in electrical socket.
