Chain type?

I know our bikes use a 520 chain with 110 links. Now this is where I get confused. The shop manual specifically says not to use a masterlink for the chain. Is everyone pretty much abiding by this? I was looking at a Parts Unlimited 520 SO Chain. It comes with a clip type connecting link. If I don't use the link then I'll have to spend the extra money for a chain tool too. What do you guys generally do? Thanks.

I use a masterlink chain...no problems. Why give yourself the greif of having to purchase tools you'll hardly use.

It would be great to not have to use a chain tool to remove the chain. All the other bikes I've messed with used master links but they were smaller bikes.  I just wanted to check with you guys to be sure it wasn't considered taboo to use a master link. Thanks.

I always ran a masterlink-type chain on my old Electra-Glide. Never had a problem with one. The main thing with a master-link chain is to make sure you always use a new spring-clip when putting the chain back together and the closed end should face traveling direction of the chain. I think a lot of people install the clip using the wrong method too. The clip should never be placed over the pins perpendicular to the link-plate. Instead, the clip should be laid over the pins flat against the plate and then pushed parallel to the plate with pliars or whatever. Otherwise the clip legs will become distorted and will come loose from the link at speed. Love the little twin and this forum.
