Indeed! Drop the Baby at over the ton and tell me that wasn't fast   . shaZam!, drop it at 60 and tell me that wasn't fast. Oh, I love my little GS500 and I do love this forum.

getting a sprocket with less teeth really helps, doesnt it also throw off your speedo like 10+ mph???

I'm not saying the GS is faster than any of those bikes. Those bikes go retardedly fast (see Ludicrous Speed). Just because Cheetahs go like 50 mph doesn't mean I'm any less impressed by carl lewis. I'm gonna say it loud and clear for you fellas... THE GS500 IS A FAST MOTORCYCLE. the fact that other things go faster doesn't make it less fast. Stop comparing chicken sizes. 7 inches is a big one even though porn stars have enormous ones, okay.

The GS has the performance of a sports car... Not quite up to speed with the race bikes but no slouch...

I would have to say the GS is a fast little bike. Honestly I dont want a bike that if you full throttle it it will flip. my friends last honda CBR was nutz fast and he said you could never full throttle it or you would die.

I dont ever get crapped on my fellow bikers, they actually think my bike is one cool ass bike. I had a guy talk about my bike being a little bike but when he actually saw it and herd it he was like damn nevermind. ofcourse its not a crazy fast bike but still faster than a fast car.

thats what my friends always say, "its funny how a 500cc bike is still faster than a fast car"

Funny you guys talk about fast...

I can teach a monkey to drive a liter bike in straight line fast.  Tell some of these squids on their bigger bikes to meet you in the twisties.  If your technique and suspension is dialed in, you should be able to bring some pain on these folks.  You can laugh as they blow past you on the straight away, but then completely blow their corner entrance.  HAHA!  Idiot squids riding bikes that are too big for them.

The cool thing about the GS500 in the twisties is that you have to ring the motor's neck to keep your corner speed up.  I love ripping corners at insane RPM's....very fun indeed.

All this talk of speedy GSes puts me in a mind to start thinking about some more mods.

(Shoot Dom, if you're that unimpressed with the ignition advancer, I'll take it off your hands...)

I don't think the advancer did anything HP wise.  What I think it did was make the throttle more responsive.  It revs a lot quicker and there is less delay between the turn of the wrist and the response you want.
As far as actual speed, let's jsut say a friend of a friend told me that the bike pulls very torquily all the way through 5th gear at 11k rpms, where my friend says the speedo showed 105mph.  My friend said that he or she then shifted to 6th, but then got scared and decided that being able to accellerate beyond that was pointless.  Sometimes I worry about him or her, but he'll be okay.

Of all the bikes I have ridden (Quite a few, I worked as a motorcycle mechanic for a while) only one scared me.  It was a Honda CR500 with a heavily ported cylinder.  You had to be real careful to not hit yourself in the head with the gas tank.
If you use the words 'tourque, recoil, ballistics, acceleration, trajectory, or velocity' to describe it, it is good.

V8Pinto

Seconded.

My dirt bike is MUCH faster than my GS.  I have to have a LOT more respect in my mind when I throw a leg over.  I even take a minute to retrain my throttle hand before taking off.

It bites back...

V8Pinto, what kind of dirt bike are you riding?  My XL600r would never top 100mph.  I guess the gears and knobbies might have had something to do with it.  Off the line it would crush anything but falls off around 50mph.

V8Pinto

My bad, I should have said quick, not fast.  Short legs vs. long legs..  ;)

 I so agree with you here... lol out of the squids in our riding group that all bought litre bikes, all of them crashed. Seriously. None got hurt (lucky for them) but they still all crashed their new 04's last year.

yet they do ride hard.. but their not fun to ride group with, they dont have respect. But the older crowd riding for 10yrs + with their litrebikes are fun to ride with in the really twisty stuff... they wave you by if you choose to ride faster than them, you clearly see them long before they pass you if they are riding faster. They allways wait if they lose you, and allways turn around if your nowhere to be found incase you dumped the bike.

I have kept up with litrebikes in the twisties with a lousy setup for a suspention.. I was more riding my own limits instead of the bike's.. so its still capable for a "slow" bike.

Yea you wish your GS had piston rings in it too right ...
Anyone that wants to compare it to a liter bike ... ever tried to fix one that got busted ... Tiny valve stems, nothing for head thickness ... breaking valves from heat and rpm is easy and if you break one ... you lose the head and the piston ... GSJack and I saw older tech motors like the GS and savage   have the same thing happen and his is back together, and I am waiting for parts to come so I can re fit it ... Saved by thick heads ... and strong and heavy pistons and pins ... my pin was un hurt, piston stayed in 1 piece ... even though it lost a piece of it ... and my head has a few marks ... welded it and smooth it out and its like new again ... Try that on a new GSXR ... There is a reason we say that the GS is built like a tank ... OK OK we dont say it, I say it ... but still   ... Like Cernunos says ... love the little bike and love the forum too ... Built for many many millions of miles ... may take forever but will go the distance ...
Cool.

That was the most difficult reading I think I've ever done

BTW, I'll agree - Yes, its easy to fix, even I can do some things and I'm mechanically inept.  But this bike is NOT dangerously fast.  There, I said it.

It can be leaned over and you can scrape pegs, its more agile than almost anything out there (Ask me how I did in Battletrax on the handling course), but the thing is NOT dangerously fast!!

Tell that to the left turner when you're cruising at 40mph.  :?

A few years ago, I was cruising at a local beach area when a Diablo pulled up to me and started revving it's engine like mad. The light went green, and I left him in the dirt.

When he caught up to me, he asked me about my bike. I said 37rwhp, 27ft/lbs torque for just under $5 CDN. He was astonished    :)

There's one vote for fast, JCH  :thumb: My friend was equally astonished when I blew away his integra, which he had modded into a fake type R.  Of course, I think his integra maxes out at around 140 and the GS doesn't top out that high.  Still, GS wins in the 1/4 mile.
Any votes for dangerous?
