What works and what doesn't... Hopefully nobody chews me out on this but there's so many different ideas out there. Who has done it and what did you use?

To the best of my knowledge the jetting formula is the same for 2001 on up.  Go one up on the pilot  to a 20, one up on the mid-main to 62.5 and one up on the main to 130 if absolutely stock.  If you KEEP THE STOCK EXHAUST AND change to an aftermarket air filter in the stock airbox go up one more on the main to 132.5.  If you go to a pod type filter you will need to go up somewhere between one more size (135) and three more sizes (140)depending on the type.  Most people use the K&N single "lunch-box" filter or individual oiled gauze pod filters and end up in the 1137.5 ~ 140 range.  If you change the exhaust and keep the stock airbox you you might need to go up two sizes from stock on the main instead of one size.  If you change the exhaust and the  air filter you might end up at 147.5 or 150 on the main.  Some people go up two sizes on the mid-main and end up between 145 and 147.5 on the main.

Start a bit richer than you want to end up - do plug readings and you will get close.  Deas-on requires an oxegen sensor or a dyno.

stock on an 04 for the main is 130, so if you only go up one, then go to a 132.5

Not to annoy others by bringing this thread back to life but...

Dynojet lists these as parts for the stage 1 jet kit for the 04-05 F.
I have an 04 w/ k&n filter and Wileyco going on soon. Is this ok to use? For aftermarket exhaust it says to use the DJ128 main jets.
Needless to say the jetting(what jets, washers, spacers, clips, etc) confuses me. :dunno:  And if i keep the exhaust stock for now then will the same setup work? Thanks

I'm running on stock jetting and a K&N drop in. It runs fantastic. It's a little cold natured in the mornings before she's warmed up, but that's how a carbed bike is. If it runs supremely before warming up it means that it will be WAAAAY WAAAY too rich when it DOES warm up. You might want to bump the mains a size, and MAYBE the mid-mains. With the Wileyco it's a slip on, so rejetting won't really be necessary. Rejetting for an aftermarket exhaust is only when you have a full system going on because it changes the diameter of the down pipe (the headers). Since it's the stock headers there is still a bottleneck going on, which means all the Wileyco will do is increase the noise. Yeah the packing inside of it might allow some airflow through, and you might notice a slight power gain, you should be fine treating it as the stock exhaust. The extent that an aftermarket slip-on changes the air flow is negligable compared to the extent that the change in header diameter does.

What type of K&N are you using? Does it have the restrictor? You might be able to get away with treating it as a stock bike, and not have to sacrifice your gas mileage with a severe rejet.

Its the k&n drop in. I am using the restrictor with it. My bike is similar to your description. If its cold I have to choke it to death and let it warm up for 5 -10 minutes. I might ride slow and let it warm up also. I get the deceleration pops also.
Are you running the stock exhaust also? Thanks X5

Yeah, I'm running stock exhaust. Bikes that are carburated and jetted correctly are a bit difficult to start in the morning. It takes a good 15 minutes to warm a bike up right, no matter the temperature. I choke mine to start it in the really cold mornings (or whatever equivalent we have here). However, after you start it and let it idle with the choke on while you put your gear on, you should be able to take the choke off and it should run fine after a block or two. It might be slightly difficult to start on super cold mornings, but at least it won't run super rich when it's warmed.

I added what I did to the '01+ topic in the FAQ.  1 up on the mains (132.5)with can and stock airbox.  I just did the same to the '05.  The '04 ran like a charm and still got mid-60s mileage (maybe 2mpg drop).  The '05 seems ducky so far.

So all u did was change your mains? I am wondering if I should hold off until I do the exhaust, see how it runs and then work from there. All I know is when I do it I only want to do it once. I have done carbs about 5 times on my first bike (no fairings), but that was a piece of crapola. I don't want to screw up my 04.

I did the mains and nothing else, mix 3 turns out.
