It'd be nice to be able to bring my laptop with me to school/work when I ride, but I'm worried about it getting run over by a car or something if I have an accident. I'm thinking a really tough metal case with foam inside would be nice to hold the laptop (which I could then put inside a backpack), but have no clue where to get something like that. Does anyone know of something like that, or do you have other solutions that would work? Thanks :)

There is a great way to protect your laptop from such a fate.

1. backup daily
2. get a personal articles insurance policy on it (about 20-30 bucks a year)

tada... no more worries.  at least, that's what I do
2 C8H18 + 25 O2 = 16 CO2 + 18 H2O + :)
the bikeography is down for a bit

I switched from carrying the laptop in a tailbag to using an old-style Givi MonoKey trunk.  It seems  it seems pretty bulletproof, and is waterproof too.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm not looking for a way to recovery from damage to my laptop, I'm looking for a way to prevent damage to my laptop.

The prior suggestions about insurance and backups are most important. But if you really want a case then I suggest http://www.pelican.com

I have used a lot of pelican cases to transport electronics ($10,000 magnetometer :o) in the marine environment while doing research. They are extremeley sturdy and well padded. They are also water proof in case you drive off the end of a pier on your GS.

Dude...do like the FBI, US military, and every other govt. agency and buy a pelican case.  They're expensive, but well worth it.  You could put this on the ocean floor and run it over with a truck (whoa...what's a truck doing on the ocean floor) and your laptop will be fine.  It may be bulky to put on the bike...but my 2 cents.  Check out this link.

I think it's going to be better to just get insurance after all. Can anyone recommend a good company?

Dom

I can attest to the durability and quality of construction of Pelican Cases...complete with automatic pressure equalization etc...the reason why I didn't suggest one is because the emmer effers are big and bulky...not really motorcyclist friendly.

look at it this way... if you have an accident, and there's a car close enough to run over your laptop, you should be worried that you, and not the laptop, will get run over.

Like Crash said.  I usually carry about $2k worth of gadgets with me in a very pricey North Face pack.  The theory being that if my gadgets get crushed then i probably was as well.  What better motivation to keep myself intact..??  FYI...alot of these high end sport pack makers like Marmot, North Face and Swiss Army make some excellent gear to carry computers through bad weather and terrain and all while strapped to yourself like a piece of really expensive armor.  Just my 2 cents... ;)
