Ok, I purchased an R6 about 3 months ago and I wanted to change the oil on it.  It has 12k miles,  I was wondering if I should use synthetic oil or regular motor oil?

Right now on my gs - 4k miles, i'm still using regular oil.

When is it time to use synthetic? pass how many miles?

Any time after the break-in period using syn oil is fine.
Common sense in not very common.

What (if any) advantage does synthetic oil have over real oil?

That will be debated to the end of time (or until we run out of petroleum)

regular non motorcycle synthetic is not good for the clutch on a bike, use regular oil in it, only use actual motorcycle sythetic oil if your going the synthetic route.  It is made to be able to work with the clutch.

There have been lots of oil threads over the years and lots of oil tests in different mags - most found little or no difference  in the actual composition and performance of motorcycle and car oils.

I have used synthetic oils in motorcycles ever since Mobile 1 came out and have never had a clutch problem.  That said, if your clutch is marginal it may be more likely to slip with synthetic than with dino oil - but  not  a clutch in good shape under any normal use.

I am currently using a 0-40 energy conserving Mobile 1 (yes that is zero not bad typing) in my GS 500 without a problem.

Air cooled engines need synthetic more than water cooled since they run hotter - and some air cooled yard equipment is being shipped with sybthetic from the factory along with a manual that says to always use synthetic - so I think that the bit about not using it in a new engine is simply to speed the initial break-in.  It would break-in with synthetic too - would just take a few extra miles.

Castrol GTX 10-40 for my babies.  Almost 19,000 miles of my 2002 GS and 8,500 miles on my DL650.  Both run better than new.
If you don't believe me, PM me and I'll give you my phone number and I'll let you listen to the engines.

I went with the mobil one on the 500f. I think it was 1200 miles... maybe 1500 miles... I've been buying it for $8 a quart and haven't had any problems.. On a side note, it seems like the warm up time is shorter..

Got Syth in my gs500 makes the motor run smoother but after a big days ride the motor gets noiser at idle with a bit of cam chain rattle and that was just after having it serviced but with the mineral oil it stays quite but does not want to rev as hard so theres always a trade off but i think I may go back to mineral oil
