Just finished Kreeming...

Man, I just came in from outside.  I was out there for hours doin that acid wash, Kreem job.  What a pain in the ace!!!!  I got it super clean inside, the only thing is that the Kreem really didnt get on the little ring where you first open the tank ( where you put the gas pump nozzle in).  Its real nice and coated all inside the tank, but is runny and incomplete right up at the top ring part - but no rust there cause I scrubbed it with steel wool.  You think its gonna rust there ??

Also, when I had the petcock out and was cleaning it, I noticed this thin film all over the long plastic thing - is that supposed to be there or was that dried up gas?  It was flaking off pretty bad, so I just cleaned it off....

Jared

Well the petcock was supposed to be out for the kreeming etc..

So likely you took the kreem off the filter deal...

Any bare metal will rust...so if it's bare...it'll rust sooner or later.

The filler neck is low risk for rust ... vertical surface, and being at the top ... but I put it there with my finger ... The kreeming is just plain painful ... and guess what ... you have 3 more days of it ... 2 coats and 24 hours per coat minimum ... tinnner is better but every progressive coat has to get thicker ...
Cool.

OH SH1T !!!!  I thought the instructions said 8-10 mins in between coats!  I did like you said and did it in three separate coats instead of dumping the whole thing in like they suggest (and rotate the tank), but I only left 10 mins inbetween the 3 coats!!!!!!!

What now?  Is it ruined??

Thrin

And Srinath, I thought your instructions said replace the petcock before kreeming, didnt they? (I think they said just clean the petcock if excess kreem clogs it, right?)

Jared

Kreem tells you to leave the petcock in???

I use POR-15  (Srinath is on Kreems Payroll...he gets a commission whenever someone admits to using it on GsTWin.com-- hehehehe ). With POR-15 the petcock stays out til it's all done (openeings taped/ plugged during the process obviously..)....

Anyway...

If the petcock is on it when kreem is in there ... put the petcock in acetone ... 10 mins should get it clean, then take it apart and acetone it again ... Now 10 mins between coats is actually just 1 coat ... I call a 24 hour dry time and scratch test = 1 coat ... 1 coat is all you need ... if you got the rust and acid entirely out in the first place ... I may have said leave petcock in while kreeming ... I remove the inner plastic thing and use a inner tube as a block off ... I may have forgotten ... I'll add it to FAQ ...
Jared - POR is Permanent ... I have seen the coating want to come loose in case of Kreem, and other red sheite ... what if POR does that, and you cant get it off with a solvent and slicing the tank open ... it still is stuck to some parts and wont come ... Kreem, especially thin coats = easy removal when you have to ... 2 cups of MEK and shake ... and its gone ... 2 more for insurance and done ...
Cool.

Well I just checked it, and it was still wet.  Some was sitting thicker on the one side, so I flipped it so it coat evenly - I mean it looks really nice and new... hope its ok...

The Buddha

OK the FAQ ... in many places I have said to put petcock with inner tube ...  use inner tube like a gasket and it will close it off well ...
Cool.

I like permanent....

I've never heard of any of the POR-15 stuff coming loose...(And  since I'm on POR-15's payroll -same deal you have with kreem  .... I would hear about it...Hehehehehe).

I dislike kreem for the very fact that it does come loose..(seen too many tanks with that stuff sloughing around in it...). I like fixing stuff once...

If I was doing it ... I'd probably be able to POR it and never have it come loose ... for others and especially shops etc and idiots who do it to cover holes etc ... and think a thick coat will work better ... No qustion ... Kreem ... man that tank I cut open ... if it had permanant coating in it, and was that rusty under ... would have been lousy ...
Cool.

There's your link Jordan- They have a PDF you can view before you buy.

Srinath--You can use it to cover small pin holes (luckily I haven't run into that problem yet- and I'd probably shop for a better tank at that point) in the tanks- according to the product info etc.

Prep work- with most any job is the Key.

I'm sure a well done Kreem job will hold up...I just don't think I've seen one well done ( that ...or it's junk... ).

Check Ebay for POR-15 products. I got my tank kit there for less than $40 delivered from Vintage Again. Hot rod builders swear by it and use it to "fix" old auto tanks. It will be another week or two before I can get to it...finals coming up and all that school stuff.

When I do it, it will be posted with pics on my project thread.

I'm telling you Sri, Stainless Steel is the way to go. Think about it....all buffed out with black "Suzuki" logo and your Shadow Ship bars. What a mod kit!  We are sitting on a gold mine!  8)

Pin holes yes ... however people sorta are afraid to de rust it well with acid when its got pin holes and they compensate by using a lot more Kreem ... I picked up a vulcan may years ago that has kreem so thick in the area of the split ... it had somehting that was the size of my wrist ... not pretty ... Needless to say it leaked at that spot again.
Cool.

the kreem kits on ebay were 36 as well, and just a bottle of kreem itself was 20 plus shipping.  Maybe you need to start peddling a few kits on ebay......

My local dealer has The Kreem sealers for $15.95 and whole kits for $24.95 ... I buy just the sealer, the rest is better to get at Home depot ... and left over muriatic acid ... cleans driveways and concrete like a charm ...
Cool.
