Having problems with my petcock...

It seems to have blown a gasket.  It won't stop leaking, and everytime I turn it to PRI it goes back to ON all by itself.  After it's been on PRI for 45 minutes it goes back to PRI and then 5 minutes later over to reserve!

:?

No really, I took it apart to clean the rust from the tank out of it, and the thin paper gasket inside tore around the edges.  I don't want it to leak, but I noticed that the parts fische doesn't have the gasket listed as a separate part.  Should I just use some of the gasket making stuff from the autoparts store and put the old one back in?

BTW I gotta send a big thanks out to srinath for helping me out with the carbs.  I got to meet him in person and he's a really nice guy.  He did look a bit green when I stopped by in the morning, but when I came back later in the day his color was much better

Thanks again srinath!

Yep, Srinath is a nice guy, I met him last summer.

I was having problems with that poor excuse for a valve a few months ago, I ended up taking it out and replacing it with an on/off valve for a lawnmower.

I know it isn't elegant, but it works..........
as long as I remember to turn it on........

My hunch was right...Pandy is the biggest Post Whore!

OK, so his pinkie nail knows more about carbs than I ever will :? , but he did help me get the steering straight on my bike, plus he is fun to turn wrenches with, esp. if you do something he can't figure out................

Still, he is one of the few(very!!) people that I would let work on anything I own, and not stand over the whole time.

Hopefully you'll get it to stop leaking. The parts aren't available separately and a new one cost over $50. If it's just a paper gasket that's leaking you could probably make one. A friend of mine used a piece of thin cardboard on his lawnmower carb.

Before I talk about the petcock...I got my Srinath Fan Club card in the mail a week or two ago. The hologram of him on front is really cool!

I've dissected a petcock also. I don't think it is worth fooling with. The diaphragm is not an FRU (field replaceable unit). If you can afford it, just order another petcock, or do the lawnmower thing. I am not sure if anyone has looked into using another company's fuel shut-off or not.

When I did mine, I had to use a "T" fitting to put the two fuel lines together into the valve(you loose reserve here), but it solved 90% of the problems I was having(the bike went from unrideable to useable).  I've since found the solution to my other problems(I have a tear in the carb boot), so all should be well later this week.

I think that Kerry has(had??) something on his website about not exceeding 150 Miles without filling up????  I now use this as a marker to find gas on my typical drives, but when I get a chance to reallly go for it, I think that I'll live by it untill I know better.

Oh Y'all are too kind ... Don helped me a lot wiht that water Kawi that busted a quarter sized hole in the back side of its head. I looked green then too from all the antifreeze probably ... when kzin came by ... 9 am or so ... I went to bed at 4 after hanging with neighbors and drinking ... I would have been nailed for WUI easy (walking under influence) ... I come and meet him ... and am feeling like I got run over by a bus ... (I got no capacity for alky ... 3 and I am out ... more and I satrt feeling the bad side effects and think I am going to die ) ... anyway Then i wake up at 12 and do them ... left handed drills ... out come pilots, then left drill the plug ... and the one he's drilled ... easy out ... Then I put it away and walk back in and realise I am hung over ... so at 9 am I wasn't ... I was still drunk ... Should have known when I threw up ... but who knows ... i am an inexperienced drunk ... had my first at 23 ... yea I was 23 when I had my first serious drink. Anyway Then I was yakking somehting about Unix and how its the currency of the future or some stupid like that ... In any case ... petcock ... should have brought that too ... Self adjusting one ... Ok I will bet its that O ring whihc prolly has a ton of permatex on it ... making it behave like a rubber band.
Cool.

One of the guys at the shop here gave me some Hylomar to try.  We use it on our fuel cells for the racecars.  High dollar stuff as I understand.  I'm gonna give it a try.  He swears by it.  If it's good enough for our race cars I think it should do.
