Hi guys,

Sometimes when I pull away from a traffic light faster than normal and brake more aggressively than normal, the RPMs in neutral stay on the high side (say 4K) for about 30 seconds before returning to normal 1.2k.  It doesn't happen everytime.  What do you think could be causing this?  Does gs500 have an rpm sensor that may be malfunctioning and not switching to slower RPMs right away when I pull in the clutch and this happens?

No rpm sensor ... its lean or sucking air or hanging cable ...

I see, thanks.  So a way to fix it would be to rejet the carbs?  Also if it was the lean mixture, would it not always be at higher rpms, rather than happening sporadically?

GSinus,

check for hanging cables before messing with your carbs...

Very, very common problem from the posts on that subject. Mine was the same way. I went completely over my bike and have it pretty much taken care. It will still idle a little high if I set the idle before the bike warms up. Some things to check are the carb boots and o-rings for the carb boots. Make sure the fuel lines are hooked up properly. Make sure the vacuum line is hooked up to the carb and petcock. Check for too tight exhaust valves. Clean and rejet the carburetors. Clean the gas tank and fuel filter. So basically rebuild the bike and hope it goes away. But seriously it's a sign of going lean so check for those things.

Its leaner below ~ 3.5 K rather than over 5K ... Dont get me wrong ... its 1 size lean everywhere but down low its 1 size in 40 (rather you are 37.5 which is 2.5 short of 40 - perfect as where you need to be) up high its 2.5 short of 125 ... so Up high its 2% lean, and down low its 6.25% lean ...  something like that ...
