would you buy a no name chain?

My 2002 came from the factory with a DID chain.  That ebay chain is probably an OEM replacement--in which case it is certainly not a "no-name" chain.

Now, if it really IS a "no-name" chain--I dunno.  Would you buy no-name tires?

It's not a bad chain.  I bought the same one from the same seller.  The brand is KMC.  It's just a basic entry level O-ring chain.

The feedback I left for the seller was "No gripes!!" and he left me good feedback as well.

You could buy one here at www.motorcycle-superstore.com for $49.99 or save a few bucks buying the Ebay one.

DONT SKIMP ON A CHAIN, lol. I bought a standard DID and it ended up destroying my CBR (more than I did in my following wreck, but tahts another story). Anyways, you have to imagine what this chain can do to a bike if it fails, and the rider.... I went ahead and bout an EX 525 O-ring chain for the CBR, and assuming its well lubed and maintained with a RIVET masterlink, I havent had any problems. Granted i wrecked the bike of my own accord, lol at least I cannot blame it on the chain this time .

Eh, I bought the same chain, same auction. Just like Dom, mine was a KMC. I've run it for ~5k miles no problems yet.

Just goes to show that even if you buy a chain from a well-reputed manufacturer like D.I.D. you still run the risk of it failing on you.  Granted it was connected with a masterlink, the weakest link(pun intended), and the problem could have probably have been alleviated had Daniely riveted his chain, but these instances are far and few between...but still proly a good idea to keep yourself from becoming the minority.  Daniely, ever gonna use a masterlink again or have you learned your lesson?  :mrgreen:

Riveting a chain is costly whether you buy a kit or have a stealer do it but it's cheaper than the damage that one could possibly incur.  Srinath has busted a couple chains on his GS and they have never done anything more than fall off, that's why I use a masterlink on my GS.  He would probably argue that the CBR engine is a piece of crap and that's why it busted everything up on Daniely's bike.

LOL yes i learned my lesson, riveted master link in place on an O-ring chain. lol...man im SO glad the GS doesnt rev as high as the my CBR. My chain just got FLUNG through everything, then hit my buddy riding behind me as it was launched off my rear sprocket, lol.

ive run nothing but masterlinked chains, in all my years, ive only had one come off and thats due to me being an idiot and running the chain WELL and Far beyond its servicable stretch limits. you could hear the engine going wahwahwahwahwah  with a steady throttle with the major streches in the chain.  yes its dangerous when things come apart like that, but ive seen rivit chains come apart too.

Ok so what are the common problems associated with worm and belt drives?  I heard Srinath a couple weeks ago mention wanting to put a belt on a GS...he proly has a reason for not mentioning a worm drive.

Clarification: If you choose to buy a D.I.D. 520V (O-ring) chain like I did ...



... it will come WITH a clip-style master link in the box.  The only reason to buy an additional clip-style master link is to put it in your toolbox for possible roadside repairs.

If you prefer an "endless" chain like the one that came with the bike, you WILL need to buy a rivet-style master link (it does NOT come in the box) and then rivet it onto the chain after you have the chain in place.  The first thread you linked to has some info about riveting tools farther down.

ok.. I tried to order from chaparralracing but shipping is going to be US$25 to send to Toronto, Canada..  

Anyway, there is a local guy selling a RK 520 with 120 links.. should I buy it and cut it down? remove 10 sections?  shorten chain is easy, just like open up the OEM chain, right? dremel time?
