i know theres all kinds of stuff out there but what do you guys think is the best mods for the $$$ greens

Better suspension and brakes (s/s lines & pads) are the things that should be upgraded first.
Common sense in not very common.

I'll second that. Incidentally if you're just getting in to working on your bike, suspension mods are pretty low impact. Better fork springs and a more  adjustable rear shock improved the ride dramatically. Then i did tires.
