Cruising RPM's / sweet spot / mystery above 7k

Edit: Sprocket size may be a factor; if you have stock sizes (16 front ,39 rear), then what you are experiencing, I believe, is normal. Same goes for jetting. The hesitation around 6-7k is where the needle comes in; shim it with a .5mm thick washer, or two.
I don't think that was the case with mine ('01), but it is a while since it was stock.  I remember it pulled OK (not great, just OK) right to 9500 rpm.  Up hills it was a different matter, and fifth was needed.
With the current setup (Uni in the airbox, full sports exhaust, Factorypro jet kit, V&H advancer) it pulls as well with a 17T sprocket as a stock one does with stock sprocket sizes.  I know this because earlier this year I had a chance to ride AussieGs's bike which was bog stock.

I'm just thinkin' that if I was going to set a landspeed record I'd run it to redline in 5th and then shift to 6th. And, not dragracing where you shift at the sweet spot, trying to take advantage of where the peak torque & hp are.

my ideal GS would have a diesel engine that gets 170mpg.

Quote from: TOMIMOTOMy GS was my first street bike. It felt fast as hell to me for the first couple of weeks than I easily became bored with the power.
...I'm spoiled with the CBR now though and I don't think I would ever be able to go back.

tell me you didnt sell your gs after only a few months and bought the cbr.

Well, I did an experiment last night and this morning involving rolling on in 6th gear. I'll preface this with my bikes current running condition: 24007 miles (needs valve adj, carb synch, chain adj and tires), stock (crashed) pipe, stock airbox with Uni filter, carbs: 2.5 turns/40/.5mm shim/125's, 40 tooth rear sprocket, no windshield, wearing full raingear (read: loose fitting, flaps alot in wind).

I was able to roll on from 4.5 grand all the way up to 9000 to top out around 109mph.
