hey guys,

is there any real reason to invest in a 100% synthetic oil?

also someone reccomnded me to change the oil every 3000 KM instead of the usuall 6. again, is it worth the investment?

thanks.

I change my oil every two thousand miles.  Dont know what that is in KM.  I dont really think you need synthetic, I run the regular valvoline and doesnt have any ill effects.  Here at my house we run it in everything like our cars, other motorcycles and lawnmowers.  I have heard that car synthetic is bad for the wet clutches, so if you are going to go synthetic then get the motorcycle stuff to stay on the safe side.

True, should purchase oil that does not damage wet clutches.

There are both mineral and synthetics that do not like wet clutches.
and there are both mineral and synthetics, prepared for wet clutches.

Synthetics are used when high temperature is expected while the
engine is working, that is, race conditions, summer racing, and
commuting with high acceleration periods.

Mineral is useful for trips and roadsters.

Another thing to keep in mind is that synthetics are more detergent than mineral, this means that dropping synthetic oil will clean your engine
and leaks may appear in old gaskets.

If your engine is new, or is in great condition (under 8Kmiles), use
synthetics and replace it each 4000 miles. Engine will last forever!.
If it has a very high mileage, and some parts are worn out, use mineral and replace each 3000 miles (5000Km). Oil will not be worn out, but will catch a lot of dirt.

I don't think that a good quality oil should be replaced under 3000 miles of use. Some people here at the University, has done
viscosity and lubrication tests to several oils, and Mobil 1 5W50 was
able to hold 120.000Km (80.000Mi) without losing his properties in a
1200cc car engine that ran for 4 years with the same oil.
Today oils are formulated to extend oil change periods for very long
and are very good quality formulated.

Used to use Castrol 20-50 in my previous GS400, as per the dealer's recommendation, but I decided to switch to Suzuki 4-stroke oil for the new GS500 since the dealer sells it at about $3. per quart. I'm sure all the oil as per the recommended type in the book is fine.
