Initial salary offer higher than requested?

This sorta weirds me out a bit.. I applied for an IT job where the advertised salary range was between $45k and $60k a year. On my application I said I wanted $52k. After the interview etc they called and offered $56k a year.

Why in the world would a company offer you *more* than what you wanted? I guess I should have just asked for $60k and had them haggle me down, but I've never seen a company haggle someone up in salary. What gives? Are they compensating for some :bs: stuff that I haven't found out about yet?

Probably so they can justify an existing payscale, possibly the guy at the top is getting over the odds and needs to make it look about right in the scheme of things.

In Cricket the testicular guard, or Box, was introduced in 1874. The helmet was introduced in 1974. Is there a message??

They offer an HMO or a PPO health insurance, dental/vision/life/short-term and long-term disability insurance, 401k with company matching $1-for-$1 up to 6%.

It just sounds a bit too good to be true.. and maybe it is. After checking-up on the company, I find this: "For the first quarter ending March 2005, the company reported a net loss of $1.3 million". This seems to be the only quarter that they posted a loss for so far, and they've been around since 1997.

Don't they call Gainesville the "Redneck Riviera"?  Maybe he's quite progressive, considering ;) .

BTW, if you don't quote his exact words, then he can still go back and edit.

They may have decided to pay you what you're worth so that you will stay around for a while.  There's a fair amount of effort required in hiring someone so it's not something they want to have to do very often.
