i vaguely remember some kawi's having emergency flashers, some others have running lights in the turnsignals.  I could be wrong, it was long ago that i had to read it but im sure i did.  as too leaving the parking light on i cup the lens with my hands to see if the bulb is lit when i lock the steering.

though is spose you could jack into the harness and setup an LED to show it if you really need a quick indicator
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.

When was the code "revised"? The 04+ models seem to have the bulb up front. The law usually allows a grandfather clause for older vehicles.

If forced to comply though, all we would have to do is obtain the correct headlight assembly (that has the bulb holder feature), the bulb holder, the bulb, and connect into the existing harness. The "P" switch lead is already there to provide the "Park" feature.

The Canadian models may already have it as do many of the Euro models. The Haynes manual refers to it as the "side light" so we know the hardware exists.

My Kawi 83 GPZ has them.

I don't see a front parking light on the 04 wiring diagram that I have.

The code was revised 1/1/04.  That's the only revision to that paragraph in the life time of the GS500.  I couldn't find the specific wording that was changed.

I concur with your finding on the schematic, but it is probable that the brown wire that does this function is in the harness. The OEM manual I have shows the "Position Light" in all the other releases of the bike.

If it is there, the conversion wouldn't be too bad...if required.  :)

I have a voltmeter/clock, which has a switched and a constant voltage wire.  See http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13084&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=voltmeter
I think I powered the switched voltage wire from the unused (brown?) wire behind the headlamp.  It turns-out, that wire is hot even when the ignition is set to Park.  So the wire is already there, should you want to add a small bulb (or bright LED cluster).

The upshot for me, is that if I put the bike in Park, then the voltmeter/clock lights up.  What's more, it starts beeping at me, because the voltage is below 12v.  So on the few times I accidentally put the ignition in Park, the bike started beeping loudly, and I fixed it before walking off.  I think that saved me three times in a year.

That's a brilliant idea...  Rather than disabling it, just add a little beeper to it...  If you're leaving the parking light on for visibility, then you're probably somewhere you won't mind putting up with the beeping...  But, it will keep you from leaving it in "Park" and killing your battery.

Now...  Who knows how to make a little beeper?   :dunno:

Rema1000

I think if I were serious about using the Park setting, I'd think of unhooking the brown tail-light wire, and connecting it to some LEDs.   As it stands, I've only used Park when I was going to be gone for just a few minutes.  Otherwise, I'm afraid the taillight will run-down the battery.

"Little beepers" can be purchased for cheap at places like Radio Shack.  :)

BUT ... there's a catch.

The voltmeter/clock that Rema mentioned also beeps when you turn the ignition to ON.  It beeps because the voltage from the battery is not up to the normal operating range.  The beeping stops when the bike revs up and the alternator brings the voltage level up.

But OK - let's say you figure out a way to isolate the PARK wiring from the ON wiring.  What about that once-in-a-lifetime when you WANT the tail light to come on in the PARK position?  Do you want it to beep the whole time as well?  If not, you may as well disable the PARK position.  :dunno:

This looks like a good way to avoid the "illegal" mod. that I suggested.  Just add an indicator LED powered from the brown wire in the headlight housing.   If the PARK position is selected the LED will light.

The LED will also light with the ignition in the ON position, but that's OK because we know that it should be on then.

I think I'll incorporate this in the next version (numeric display) of my gear indicator.
