Interesting how the R1 blows out to an early lead.  This is a common characteristic of motorcycles -- high power to weight ratio.  (The GS500 can do this to almost any car from a stop light.)  Once the turbines wind up to speed the plane takes over.

But I found it interesting that the Porsche zooms ahead of the R1 towards the end.  Can't see clearly enough but suspect the bike pulls up after the jet gets airborne, probably thinking the race is over.  Perhaps it's because of the dust the Porsche does donuts in?

Anyway, enjoy the vid.  As always, comments are appreciated and responded to by the greater GS500 community.

A few questions come from seeing this fun.  Dominant are:

• How does one get permission to stage this kind of event?
• Does anyone recognize the flag the starter uses?
• Does the Porsche loose control and spin out, or is he just having a bit of fun?

There have been several races similar to this for car shows.  For the Brits  I know either 'Top gear' or 'Fifth Gear' had a very similar race between Michael Schumacher and a fighter jet.  One of those shows also had a race between a Honda race bike, Honda race car (F1?), and a Honda race boat.

damn...what's up with the porsche killing the R1 on top speed....what's the top speed on those 911 turbos?

Never have been able to understand the whole "lets race such-and-such a fast airplane from 0-200 with such-and-such a fast car/boat/bike/etc."

There is no comparison.  Especially if both start off idle.  Most large turbine engines take at least 5 seconds for N1 to stabilize and another second or two for the EPR level out.  By that time, a bike or car is so far down the runway it's not funny.

Same with the turbine bike deal.  The thing will be a dog.  A whole lot less doggy than a JT9, but doggy all the same.  If top speed is the goal, it's the thing to have.  If you have to stop and go a lot, you'd be better off on an ninja 250.  At least it would use a whole lot less gas.   :mrgreen:
