Got my GS500 about a month ago.  I'm very pleased with it so far.  I't's a 2000, all stripped down and black with pro-flo clip ons mounted brutally low, Yosh pipe etc.  I had a set of Pirelli 150's mounted today and tomorrow I intend to tackle a mighty stretch of trip.  The anual "Total Fest" rock and roll blowout in Missoula, MT is this weekend and I'm going to ride there from Portland, OR.  It will take all day but U.S.12 through Idaho is supposed to be a real treat.  Wish me luck!

560 miles is a pretty hefty day - especially on a GS500 "with pro-flo clip ons mounted brutally low".  :?

Get an EARLY start, and take plenty of breaks like Manjul said.  Otherwise, you may not have time to take pictures....  :(

On a lighter note, when I zoomed in on Highway 12 it looked like nothing but twisties all the way across Idaho.  :thumb:

your crotch is going to file for divorce after you finish that ride.  Good luck, and pack some rain gear.

well that's a good morning ride, what are you going to do all afternoon?

Try and start at 4:30 or so... be rolling down the road by 5am, and don't stop for breakfast until you leave I-84.  Have a breakfast without too much fat or sugar (omlette, no peppers, no cheese) and half the usual coffee.  Take short breaks to stretch every half-tank of gas.  Don't take a longer break until you hit Montana.  Avoid junkfood.  You won't go as far, as fast as you would in a car.  I'm lucky if I average much above 40 mph once I include pit-stops and breaks.

Rema, that is whare the hwy pegs really come in handy,  kicking your legs out in front of you and streaching out your hamstrings.  having those decreased my pitstop times by 50%.

I stop at 150 miles for breakfast and gas, then again at maybe 225 miles, and am home by noon at 300 miles.  I'd like to stop at 150 miles, 250 miles, 350 miles, then home by 400 miles... but 8 hours is about my limit, and I run out of time.  If I could shorten my breaks (as you mention), then I might make that 400 miles.

To stretch, I put my feet up on the case savers sometimes... but they buzz like crazy.  Most of the highway pegs I see are chrome, and don't look like they'd absorb much vibration, either.

Since I commute by bike, something temporary for weekends would be nice; like a bar I could clamp across the front of the bike, from side to side.  A 1x2 board fits behind the frame, beneath the exhaust flanges, but would probably char from the heat. Maybe some angle iron would work... then mount the passenger pegs onto the ends of the angle-iron.

mine were 20 bucks at the bike shop.  the cheepest ones they had.  they just bolt on and fold up.  they are pretty buzzy.  I find it a good change from the pegs though.  it keeps the blood flowing in the toes
