for the people that live in the colder parts of the country, yet try to ride most of the year anyways

Does any one use oil of that weight in the winter?  is there any start up (or any other sort) problems?

If it's cold, WHY would someone go with an oil that is HEAVIER than that recommended?

Look in your manual, it will tell you what weight to use with what temperature range.

10W40 I'm sure would work for ANY temperature that I'd EVER want to ride in.

the manual says:

20F to 104F use 20w50

-4F to 104F use 10w40

Also (colder temp)

-4f to 86F use 10W 30


As Joerocker said... I would stick w/ 1040.

However the dealer stuck 20/50 in my bike, and said that he did so because of the warmer temp!?! I am doing an oil change this week and will be going back to 1040

Unless you're riding below 20F, then it sounds like 20w50 is within spec.

i am thinking of staying with 15w50 as well.....I was just asking to find out weather or not I need to switch for the colder months

joerocker:  As far as I understand going with oil that is heavier provides additional protection for your gears.....
