Sorry if that came across as preaching, I was just trying to get a feel for about how much a short-sleeved shirt VS a long-sleeved VS a hoodie VS a riding jacket will protect a rider.

weaselnoze

no u werent preaching. no one has yet thankfully :). u know how it is tho. when u f%$k something up and have 18,000 people tell you what you did wrong

Sorry about your wreck, but I'm glad your injuries are limited to some rash and a mangled bike. Look at the bright side, at least you didn't crush your new exhaust.

Heal up.

I'm so glad that you are okay, I really can't believe this happened to you. I just can't imagine what the heck you were doing that caused all of this! :dunno:

Phaedrus

Yeah I don't really get it either..you said you were goofing off and you screwed up..but it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. You hit a pothole..anyone could have hit a pot hole. And if you were only doing about 40mph..it is not like you were out being a complete idiot.

The only thing I see you did wrong was not very good was not wearing your gear. We've all done that though..I admit I have, but after reading this, I don't think I will again. :o

i dont ride like a squid. i ride hard but safe. u wont see me squeezing through traffic on the freeway. i wear my jacket 90% of the time too. i wont get into detail but i will say it was preventable.

Really sorry to hear about your spill. It could have been a lot worse, glad to see that you came out somewhat ok. I dont think anyone will preach at you as some of us over the years have been in the same boat. I had a good one about 15 years ago when I lived in Maryland. At the time they didnt have a helmet law ( dont know if they do now or not) but I did have my helmet on, however the tee shirt and shorts that I was wearing wasnt too helpful. I got it the same way, too hot for jacket and jeans. I have learned since. glad to see that your learning wasnt a harder lesson.
When in doubt, (insurance or none) go get checked out. Hospitals that are publicly owned have to see you no matter what.
People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because it's safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs.

Bikes fix easier than we do. I'll take a totalled bike if I can walk away from the crash, every time.

Take care of yourself!

Thats true Chris, I've had to go to the hospital for something almost as stupid (got a q-tip stuck in my ear at 3am haha). Anyway, that was before I had my job where I have good health insurance. I didn't have ANY. But I had to go..and there is a program called Hill Burton (sp?) that I had to sign up for..the entire cost of the E.R. visit to me was $0.00. Apparently it was a federally funded program for people that work like I was but did not health insurance options. Probably too late now since it wouldnt be an ER visit, but good to know for the future.

Quote from: weaselnozestill debating whether or not to get treatment (no health insurance).

OK, so no health insurance... but do you have current motorcycle insurance? You may not have collision insurance, but minimum insurance to ride/drive in Pennsylvania includes liability and (ta-da!) medical coverage:
Quotepays medical bills for you and others covered on your policy regardless of fault. The minimum limit is $5,000 of coverage.

See http://www.ins.state.pa.us/ins/cwp/view.asp?a=1339&q=545100#minimum

If you've got bike insurance, then I'd definitely file a claim against the medical portion and have it looked-at.

...but that's me.

Chances are if you called your insurance agent and said anything about being injured in a crash, it's going to end up on a CLUE report even if you don't file a claim. CLUE is like an MVR for insurance losses. PA has a first party medical benefit on it's auto policies (the state requires at least $5k). I don't sell motorcycle insurance but I imagine it's the same. If you mentioned the accident to your agent you'll probably see an increase on your policy after it's next renewal so you might as well get some treatment. Hell that's why we pay for insurance... At least see your regular doctor if you don't file a claim. Doctors are usually pretty understanding and get right to the point when they realize you're paying in cash (I've been there too).

Your health is more important than Carlisle... It will be there next year if you are..

If you have full coverage insurance on the bike it probably includes some medical coverage.

sorry bout your spill, glad it wasn't worse than it was. Don't stress to much about the bike, It aint worth stressing about material stuff. just be glad that you're ok. I don't think that road rash will give you much problems, like others have said, keep it clean and it should be ok. I've been torn up plenty of times, usually from doing stupid cra@p, and as long as it stays clean it's not a problem. If I may ask, what kind of gloves were you wearing? I hate hearing about failed seems on clothing.

first off. i called my agent to find out if i had any kind of medical coverage on the plan. they said no but to call progressive to be sure. this is where i learned that it is an option and not required for motorcycle insurance in pennsylvania. before i could double check for sure with her about whether or not i had it, i hung up.

now u said something about a CLUE thing. well how can they increase my premium when they dont pay out anything for damages to me or my bike? i had no collision. i never gave the lady on the phone any info however i did have to punch in my policy number to be able to talk to her. idk if she was able to obtain taht however because she didnt even know my name (she kept asking)

oh the gloves were brand new teknic smt gloves. i'd buy them again. it split at the seam btw the leather and ventilating material. a mesh of some sort. the rest of both gloves took a lot of shaZam! but never wore through. do you think i could contact teknic and get a replacement for the gloves failing?

Its worth a try. make sure you send in a picture of ur injury, and a picture of the glove. Would be even better, if u sent a picture with the glove on, that showed the injury. If it can work for a AA battery exploding for no reason and getting free batteries, this would for sure work. You got nothing to lose eh.

Quote from: weaselnozeit is an option and not required for motorcycle insurance in pennsylvania.

Something smells fishy. The state website I linked says $5k minimum medical for a "vehicle"; it doesn't mention motorcycle versus automobile. You could call your agent, and say that you're shopping around for better insurance options. Ask him to give the you specifics of your current policy: how much property damage liability? how much bodily injury liability? how much medical? (I'll bet that he answers "$5k" to the last one). If you want to hide your intentions, ask him what it would cost to add comprehensive to your policy. Or, he may just offer to fax you the complete policy (to help with your "comparison shopping").

Vehicle insurers like Progressive hate to pay medical. There may be language on the policy that says that they only pay medical after your health insurance is exhausted. It could be that they are just giving you the run-around, because that's how they make money.

they specifically said its an option for motorcycle insurance. they have options for 1k 5k and 10k medical coverage. vehicle is 5k mandatory

If an agent or an adjuster is informed of an accident (claim or not) it's recorded... That's just the way the insurance machine works.. It may not be fair but the insurance company will argue it's not fair for them to charge you the same rate after having an accident. Sometimes I interrupt customers and inform them about that when they call asking questions and start saying "okay i was in my lane and..." It gives them a break and I have less paperwork..

I know for sure that car policies, even with just liability, are required to have 5k medical 15/30/5 limits, as well as a tort option (I have a non-resident PA property & casualty license but the company I work for doesn't touch bikes).

You should be okay if they didn't look up your policy and you didn't say there was an accident when they gave you that answer. If you want to be sure about medical coverage just ask them to fax or mail you a copy of your declarations page. If you have any coverage it will be on that sheet. I've never dealt with progressive but they might even be able to email you a copy.
