Hey guys,

I want to change my air filter. From the searching i did on GStwins, i found that a K&N replacement air filter is the SU-5589. Its a drop in filter, with the existing airbox. There is a air restrictor in which you can take according to k&ns website.

I want to know if they make a filter where i dont need the airbox, where i can just directly put a filter to the intake, because isnt that the way you get the most power? and get that cool intake sound aswell  :thumb:  :dunno: Let me know what u think.

If you dump the airbox and put on pod filters you would have to re-jet.  And yes, pretty sure K&N sells three types of filters for the GS if I remember correctly.  Drop in, one pod for each carb (uni-pod?) and one that has two openings that slip on each carb (lunchbox I think).  Just going off memory here so I could be wrong :dunno:

Ah yes, thanks :thumb: How many of these do i need? two or just one? And rejetting is absolutely necessary right?

You need only one. I ordered from USDieselParts just a few days ago for mine. Rejetting is recommended, yes, but without freeing up the exhaust (dunno if you have or not) it does not add too much extra power by itself.

So getting the lunchbox filter, and rejetting, but not having a aftermarket exhaust does nothing? Cauz i would love to get the filter with the most free flow of air.

Yep, it replaces the whole airbox assembly. As far as power gains are concerned, I believe the main choking point is the exhaust on these bikes, but there might be some power increase from just the K&N. Anyone done just the airbox? Noticeable power gains?

Hi. I am a thickheaded newbie.  :P I don't get it. If you get the OEM-style drop in K&N, do you still need to re-jet?

No the drop in filter includes a restrictor. this restrictor can be removed if you decide to rejet.

Do you guys have a problem with the air flow restrictor coming loose?  I just bought the K&N 5589 and I need to use the restrictor since my bike is stock but the restrictor doesn't fit snugly.  It's loose and moves around, and as I figured, as soon as I started riding it popped right out.  Fortunately it jammed between the airbox and battery bay so I didn't lose it.

I figured putting in some Shoo Goo to keep in in place wasn't the best idea.
