FRAM filter o-ring

the one that comes with the filter... why the hell is it not the right shape?  what do u guys do with it? i just throw it away..  its the CH6000 right?

man...ch6000 that's it...couldn't find it anywhere today, where did you get it?

I picked up a suzuk one ((16510-03g00-x07)) it's totally the wrong one...idiot kids working at the bikeshop (won't name it though). And I wasted the oil since I had already drained the old stuff...looked like tar. My bike said: "thank you"

The O-ring isn't the right size/shape?  Hmmm, that's never happened to me with a CH6000.  :dunno:

You throw away the O-ring?  I guess that makes sense if it truly won't fit.  I usually SAVE them ... in an empty oil filter box, and reuse the current one once or twice.  That way I can recover when I get a new O-ring that has a weird wrinkle or other defect in it.

well no one and i mean no one in my area has it.  nor do they have any other brand. well i never tried the dealer but we all know why..  so i just have national auto, or pepboys order it for me.  some how they have it next day!  i pay 6.25 each time.  and each time i get the same weird shaped o-ring.

I found filters for my '04 online at BikeBandit.com - here's the item number and name. Filter and O-ring are a perfect fit everytime!

Ha. Those crazy B#$ards at Fram, giving us funny shaped o-rings :lol:  . Just changed my oil today... and my O-ring looks like that too..

Anyway, anyone have any tips to get the oil filter on a little easier? The old one seemed to slip off really easy but i almost had a hernia putting the new one on... I really didn't want to use a hammer :P

Advice? Thoughts?

I just bought mine at the local Canadian Tire. They always have the CH6000 in stock for 9$. I just installed the new filter yesturday and it has the right gasket with it. I guess you just always get defective ones. haha.  :cheers:

Sorry to say, but it sounds like you were slipped the wrong filter as well as a bad O-ring.  For more info, see this post by gsJack and the incriminating evidence that I subsequently documented.

It seems that Fram quality control is pretty sub standard in materials and workmanship.  I will try to dig it up but I had a letter from a Fram employee talking about the plant he worked in.  I am not one that believes all that I hear online, but it does seem like there are alot of negatives out there about Fram :dunno:   I only use the oil filters I get from the dealer for the bike.  The cage gets NAPA branded filters which are manufactured by Wix.

I don't have any problem with the Fram filter, as long as it's really the right one.  I recently ordered 10 or 12 of them at once ... but when I picked them up I checked every one of them (to make sure the CH6000 part number was stamped on the filter itself) before leaving the store.

say 5000km/oil change...and assuming you change filter everytime...that's 50000km!!!!

Yeah ... sounds pretty optimistic, eh?  ;)

I had 2 GS500s at the time.  When I sold one to my brother I sent about 4 filters along with it.  I just got tired of having to order them one at a time, and the fact that nobody around here has shelf space for the CH6000 anymore made me a little nervous.

I also got some extras in case richard or another local GS owner runs into the same problem - then I can charge them DOUBLE!  (Just kidding.  :lol: )

It was proper (ch6000 from Canadian Tire) and went on after a while of pushing around the fairing, I chose to keep the same o-ring on there from my previous change since it still looked decent... after only 1500km it should be :). Very cool article regarding FRAM and you even have pics to prove it. That is truly quite strange and makes me want to take mine out again for one final inspection.

I wouldn't worry about it.  Honestly.  I mean, I would check for leaks in case the O-ring didn't get pressed tightly against the block by the filter cover.  But if you were able to get the filter on OK, it should function just fine.

I'm only aiming to make your future oil changes go a little more smoothly.  :)

I made sure to apply some oil to the seal on the filter before slipping it on.  Don't know if it helped it to slide on any easier but I didn't have a problem getting it pushed on all the way, plus it seemed like a good idea at the time.
