Rust on frame of 95 GS

I'm looking into buying a 95 GS5003, and for the most part the bike is pretty clean. Aside from the dirt (the guy lives on a gravel road) and a few scrathes, its all good. However, there are a lot of little, and I mean like not even pin head size, dots of rust.
Is this common among the 95's? I'm trying to remember if I read that here or another board.

Second question: I know its rust and its a cancer, but can surface stuff like that be buffed out or something without going into to much expense?

Thanks.

I'm thinking that it might be road salt that has eaten away at the paint. Double check the title too as a gravel driveway spells the bike has been down at low speeds I'll bet [80% sure] The little dots might be where the gravel scraped the paint off.....AS you know exposed metal oxidizes=rust. Most of the older GS's have some rust on them unless the owner re-painted the bike/ kept wax on the bike...If you are ambitious and like re-building it is relatively easy to repaint the GS500E bike frame and all. Of course that's if the price is right for the beginning project platform. Haggle with the price and see what you can muster down to 8)

Welcome!

Nevr-Dul is useful in removing surface rust; it is usually available at hardware or lighting stores.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

No... Rust came stock on all IH Scouts...
Fett's (CRASHED) Ride-Flush Mounts, Aluizio Undertail, Aluizio Hugger, Wileyco w/flange, K&N, Sudco Jets, Custom Painted Tail & Fender, 2wheeljunkie LED Tails & Factory Clip-ons       Now I'm rolling an old school GSXR1100 w/1260cc kit built by Joe Marasco himself and two Harley 883 sportsters!

Yup ... stock ... Sometimes You can also add it aftermarket ... Like the V&H headers ... In some locations ... like frame down tubes in front of the motor, side rails and near the shock mounts and swingarm ... in evitable ... road crap hit those parts at high speed pock marking it in the first 1000 miles or so ... from new ... then water and elements get to work on it and rust ... Good thing is ... constant riding will keep them popping fresh by sand blasting the rust away ...
Cool.

Cool, thanks for the info. What would checking the title show? I'm thinking if it was just a drop it wouldn't get reported. Unless I missunderstand what you mean, wouldn't dropping it without it being a serious accident be like banging a shop cart in the parking lot at Wal-Mart? Thats something that just doesn't warrent a police report.

You have to visually inspect the bike for any spills, only the most serious stuff gets reported and on a cheap bike like the GS not even all those are reported, the owner takes it out of his pocket to get the bike going again.  Look for scrapes on the engine side covers, handlebar ends, turn signals, mirrors, forks, and the brake and clutch levers.  Those are the places where a tip over will affect the most and almost all tip overs will affect at least one of those, trust me I know from experience.
