Vee Lay Co?? How they hell do they figure its VEE LAY CO?  :dunno:  I would have thought "While Ee Co", thats how I've always said it. Hm.

Vee Lay Co.. :?

Not uncommon for "W" is pronounced like a "V" in other languages, German for example. At least it does not sound a cartoonish as "While Ee Co"
Common sense in not very common.

It is an Italian brand so it's not really surprising.  Are you really going to change how you pronounce it now that you know how it's officially pronounced? ;)

It reminds me of that Christmas movie..the one where the kid wants a Red Rider BB Gun but his parents say "You'll shoot your eye out!". Remember that movie? They play like like 10 times in a row at Christmas time.

Anyway, the part where the father gets that Leg Lamp..and it says "Fragile" on it. He reads it out loud as "FRA GEEE LAY..hmm must be Italian".

When I got my Wileyco in the mail, I shoulda read it as "VEE LAY CO..must be Italian.."

  Hot damn I'm funny

That's interesting, because "real" Italian only uses 21 letters.  (See http://www.cyberitalian.com/html/alphabet.htm for an interactive pronunciation page.)

The letters J, K, V, X and Y are rarely seen, and are almost always part of "foreign" words.

Still, given the pronunciation conventions, an Italian really would say "vee-lay-co".  But they would wonder what country the word came from.... :dunno:

Another word is "Linux", the operating system. Now it seems pretty common for people to pronounce it "LIH NUCKS", but since it is a word from another country (Netherlands I believe), they actually ponounce it much differently. I've heard sound clips of Linus Torvalds (the one who started Linux) and he said it a bit differently, more like "LEE NOOKS".

But when the word becomes "Americanized", we change things to suit us. "Lee Nooks" seems awad to say in our language, as would "VeeLayco".
