"and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father."

He's saying that his believers and followers will do greater works than him... 'cause he's dead.

Kinda hard to do great works when you're dead. :dunno:

But...  People out there CAN make blind see again...  They can make the deaf hear...  And the lame walk...  We have a cure or a treatment for nearly every disease...  We can also bring back the dead...

Just a matter of perspective...  It might take machinery...  It might take surgery...  But, it can all be done.

We can also die and be born again.  Pretty neat, huh?

^^ yep, and faith.  I don't think anyone that believes the bible would argue you don't need faith to believe the Bible...  its a prerequisite.

i also get the feeling that the greater deeds we do are because of our inherently weak dispositions.  Jesus = perfect... we are not.  Gives our miracles a little more credit i think.
LIFE should NOT be a journey to the GRAVE with the intention of arriving SAFELY in an attractive and well PRESERVED body, but rather to SKID in sideways, CIGAR in one hand, favorite beverage in the other, body thoroughly USED UP, totally WORN OUT, and screaming WOW - WHAT A RIDE!

I don't think great works are a requirement for salvation according to the bible...

But... What do I know.  I haven't read the NT in a few years. :dunno:

Good catch, RVertigo.

2000 years or christianity won't be undone on a message board.

(hint: I always read the Bible at weddings.  Much more interesting than watching some buddy of mine throw his life away.)

Right, Jesus isn't saying you have to do what he did to be saved, he's talking to his disciples.  That verse is John 14:12.  It helps to read the whole passage in context to understand what he is saying.  He just told his disciples that he is going to be betrayed, and they are upset.  He's telling them they will follow him someday.  I'm not sure I fully understand what Jesus is saying either in that specific verse, I guess it goes along with that verse about having "faith like a mustard seed" and being able to tell a mountain to move and it will move.  I think that is obviously a figure of speech, but it's true that if you put a little faith in God he will do great things through you.

Also, if you look at verses 8 & 9...

Quote8Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

Even Philip didn't understand what He was saying, and he was speaking face to face with Jesus.  So I think it is only natural for us to have a hard time understanding what he is saying.  But I think if someone truly wants to understand it God will show you the truth if you ask Him.
