Hi everyone!  I have not been on this site for a while, but it is good to be back.   I just thought I would let everyone know about my new personal speed record.  I have heard that the GS has got to about 185km/h for a top speed, but my 05 just got to 199km/h yesturday.  I have only been rider for about 3 months so I'm glad i got the GS first cuz I would probably go even faster if I could.  Next year I plan to get a bigger bike, and then the real speed will come! :mrgreen:   Also the fuel was only regular, I don't know if that makes much of a difference, but we'll see.  Ne way, its nice to be back!

The speedo seems to be dead on until about 50mph, after that its error raises exponentially from there, i.e. indicated 80mph is actually 74mph, and so on.....

Can I have your front fender after you wreck your bike?

That makes sense. Sometimes I'll be on the highway doing 80mph indicated and I'll be getting passed like I am sitting still. I am like WTF? Now I have a better understanding.

1st, After I wreck the bike, why would u want the front fender? It'll be wrecked too! lol.  As far as the speedo goes, I've never heard of that.  I can't see an 05 having that kind of a glitch.  I could be wrong, but when it is made, it has to give accurate speed rates?  Does it not. Other wise it would be classed as unsafe.  Either way it was fast and and fun, but kinda scary, cuz it was like 33 degrees celcius, and I don't wear a jacket over 30.  All I had was my helmet! I know stupid, but I do a lot of dumb things!

i have to say that this post smells of disaster in the making.  lets analyze the situation, new rider on for 3 months, maxing out speed at 199 km/hr, no jacket, and relatively no grasp of stupidity.  And wants a bigger bike in a year.

I understand that all of you think I am stupid, but I live life the way I like to, with excitement. If I die tomorrow, at least I had fun today.  To make a point also, I got perfect on the riding test at the course.  I know that is not an excuse to ride fast and dangerously, but also I was on an empty Highway, (401).  But I still do understand the risks.  Everytime u throw ur leg over the seat, ur taking a risk.

No need to get upset...

Look, I am just telling you the truth, it is a well known fact that there is speedo error, even in cars.

My bike is a 2000, yours is a 2005, there really has been no major changes in this bike in thoes years with the exception of the fairings, and a mid jet in the carbs, and a few other cosmetic things.

The speedo being off does not make it unsafe. It will keep you under the speed limit, if you always ride with the indicated speed.

05, same speedo as the 04 and 02 and 01, all wrong the faster you go.
My 04 is the same way, fastest was 125Mph indicated, which would probably be about 105 to 110 true speed, which I believe that is what they say is the top speed.

there are plenty of little "black" boxes on the market to correct errors. Not sure they will work on the GS though.

Figured as much... I get blown by on the highway all the time going 10-20 over the speedlimit... It's like these are running from something -- maybe the sound of my lawnmower... erm GS500 ... Whenever it happens I wish I could pull out one of those old school police cruiser lights, stick it on the top of my head and pull these wankers over cop style...

I don't think anyone who spells "fastest" that way should be allowed to operate ANY sort of vehicle  :nana:

Well thanks for the tip on the speedo. I didn't realize that manufacturers would miss out on such a detail, but i guess they did.  I didn't mean to come off pissed in my last statement, so sorry if I affended u.  I just have a mind frame that everything should be made perfect, especially if I'm riding it! lol.  I guess the only way I will know is when I get pulled over! lol. Oh, so does this mean that a cop can't ticket you for speeding if the use the "pace" method? Seems if speedos are off an unknown amount, they need to do more than just follow you and check their speedo in order to cite you.

Speedo's on police crusiers that use that method are calibrated on a regular schedule.

you speedo will normally indicate a faster speed than what you are traveling. So if you go the speed limit by following your speedometer in your car you actually are not speeding.

It's not legal for manufactuers to make speedos that read low, but it is legal - and common! - for them to make speedos that read high.  The justification is that if you muck with your tires, you won't end up with a speedo that reads low; I think they also just want to make their vehicles seem faster.  :p

IIRC, the allowable BMW car speedo error is 10% +/- 4mph, which is pretty dang high.  They have a TSB on that.

1) Get a mesh or perforated leather jacket to wear in hot weather -- why wait until after you've enjoyed the fun of road rash?

2) The guy who won the "golden cone" at my MSF course for a perfect riding score promptly dropped his bike as he was leaving, trying to show off.  Your perfect score on the endorsement exam means you do pretty well driving under 45km/h in a parking lot, not that you're invincible.

i've had my speedo radared many times.. its about 10% high.

100km/h = 89-90km/h, 160km/h = 146km/h, 200km/h = 180km/h.....

sucks but as soon as you get a different profile of tires, it can affect the speedometer, so I guess the companies want to avoid getting in trouble for reading low.
