Well went for a ride with my buddy who hasnt been riding long and just bought an r6 of all bikes to begin with lol, but anyway about 5 mins before we rode he asked if i wanted to trade for the day he ride my 98 gs and i ride his 05 r6.  well i laughed cause i thought he was joking but infact he wasnt.  to make a long story not quite as long, i put about 150 miles on the bike that day and really enjoyed it.  brakes were great, handling was good compared to some of the other sportbikes ive ridden and my 94gsxr 600.  the powerband took some gettin used to - felt like it has absolutely no power low range in the power band but once you got up to about 9 grand good lord hold on to your underwear.  150mph in a very short piece of asphalt and i didnt ever realize i was going that fast till i looked at the speedo that i could barely read cause of vibration.  the front brakes are great maybe a little too much if you touch them barely over 100 be careful.  overall great bike.  gear box was even more clunky than my gs but who cares right? well just thought i would share this experience with some of you guys.  it makes me wanna junk my gixxer, but i could never get rid of old faithful gs :thumb:

I believe very LITTLE of what you wrote here...

An GS compares to the R6 like a Volkswagon Beetle compares to a Corvette.

You say it had NO power below 9k?  How many spark plugs were disconnected?  A 600cc sportbike will smoke ANY GS, smoke it!  At 4k it has the power of the GS at 9k, maybe more.

They also handle MUCH better in anything short of a parking lot.

As for vibration, maybe it was the non-firing cylinders causing the blurryness.

Come on buddy, you may love your little GS, but PLEASE be honest in your comparison.  The GS is a TOY compared to the R6!

My God man!  Who exactly are you trying to fool here?

i believe it.  i've had 3 600's and riding at the track i would always stay in lower gears revving in the 10k range.  you still feel power, but it isnt instant like riding twin.  a 600 motor is like turbo- it takes a while to kick in, but when it does its like a kick in the butt  :o

Oh, I agree with that fact that PEAK power for the R6 is from say 8k and up.

BUT, this guy was comparing a 600cc R6 sport bike with his GS500!!!!

He was saying that the R6 "has absolutely no power" until 9k!  BS!  The GS has absolutely no power period!

ray,

I believe it was "Bones" who talked like that...

oops.  I stand corrected.

Dammit, Joe! I'm a lawyer, not a Star Trek fan!

Ok Let me clear a few things up i never compared the power of the gs directly towards the r6 im well aware of the fact that the 6 will smoke the gs as a matter of a fact if you would wipe your glasses off and read again you will see the only comparison i made was the gear box was clunky , which it was very much so and more than my gs, and i think its safe to say that, gearbox aspects of the bike can be compared no matter engine size and horespower.  And as of having power below 9 grand well it didnt have much and honestly didnt have anything till about 7 pure gutless, and wouldnot out run anything much if you put a rev limiter at 8or 9 k  Even though i never said the bike wasnt fast hell i know that bike will split you ass hairs cause it did mine. So thanks for all the input pos-neg its all good but i think you should read the facts a little closer before calling someone out as a liar.

PETE: No, it's not. It's funking Sunday. And I've got to go to funking work in four funking hours 'cos every other funker in my funking department is funking ill! Now can you see why I'm SO FUNKING ANGRY?

If it had NO power down low as you say...  There is something seriously wrong with his bike.  At 4k it should be pulling like the GS does at 9k.  Better really.

You sy you did 150mph no problem and then complain about reading the gauges, maybe your head was buffeting in that wind.  The I4s are MUCH smoother than the GS.

If you, I, or ANYONE were to show up riding a GS, hop on an R6, we would be blown away by the difference in performance.  End of story.

Hell, I sold my GS because it sucked so bad compared to the Nunja I rode and then bought.

Your discription just didn't jive.  It seems more like you were comparing it to the GSX and NOT the GS.  But, you start out by saying you traded your GS for the R6 this leads the reader toward believing that you are comparing THOSE two bikes.

And yes, it's just me being me...  Honest in my opinion and expecting the same from others.

ANYONE reporting honestly would say WOW, I was blown away today when I traded my GS for a ride on an R6.  You may not like the ergos, the power, but to say it handles OK, has NO low end power, etc. is just plain false.  It has 5X the power of the GS at ANY RPM and it handles like a dream compared to the GS.

joe ..... please re-read the enitre first post.....

1. "handling was good compared to some of the other sportbikes ive ridden and my 94gsxr 600".....not his gs500......

2.  "the powerband took some gettin used to - felt like it has absolutely no power low range in the power band but once you got up to about 9 grand good lord hold on to your underwear".......I've also ridden sport bikes that felt like this, especially when compared to the gs5.....

.....so what you're arguing about really wasn't ever said or implied.....

Well, yes it was implied really...

This is a GS forum, posted in "General" so, usually things are related to the GS.  Why would I think you were comparing it to another bike?

Your title was "rode a R6 today" or something like that, and your first sentence was how you showed up on your GS and traded for the days ride.  I would guess that the GS is what you compared it to.  Why would I care how it compares to a GSX?  Why would I expect in a GS forum his comparing it to a GSX?  People post all the time comparisons between the GS and whatever.  How many comparing a Busa to a 883 posts have you seen here lately?

BTW, WHY do you still ride the GS if you have a GSX?  I sure wouldn't.  But that is another thread.

Anyway, I'd bet I'm not alone in thinking you were comparing the R6 and GS when reading this and I simply thought you were "out of your mind" with your comments.  Lets compare a bicycle to a motorcycle, a GS and a R6 are that far apart.

No biggie, not worth fighting over.  Just admit that the R6 AND the GSX or ANY 600cc class sport bike blows away the GS.  I'd say junk the GS and keep the GSX if anything.  After a few years experience I don't know why anyone wouldn't be ready to move up.  The GS is GREAT for what it is and a full blown sport bike it isn't.

I'll save the fighting for the "odds and ends"!

Simply a misunderstanding...

If I didnt know anybetter Joe I would think you love to get people all worked up by twisting words around and manipulating whats being said, which is probably all in good fun so its all good. But i will respond to why i still ride my old slow little gs is cause i like it not sure why i do so much but i do there is nothing spectacular about the bike but it is very easy to ride and rider forgiving i dont ever plan to get rid of it actually , im probably not the only one that feels this way about there gs. I do still wanna argue the low rpm range power of the six and man it doesnt have any punch in the low range and does not pull like the gs does at 9 when the 6 is at 4, but the mechanix of twins are like that they just have that low end punch plus the gs is geared lower. anywho its all in good fun
