There's 3gal of fuel in the tank and the tank petcock is on.  I'll do the check for gas in the bowls...

Quote from: RoadstergalI've saved it.  Thanks, you rock!
My pleasure!

Quote from: Roadstergal...it's still cranking and not starting.
Did you remember to turn on the tank side petcock?

EDIT: Someone beat me to the question and you beat us to it totally!!

Dang, that's clean!   :thumb:

Yes, that's how I have it routed.  So I must have done something silly and left something off or open... I'm at the lab, but I'll bop home in a minute and check.

Roadstergal

This is interesting.

When I open the carb drain screws, no gas comes out.  But the flow as far as the petcock works fine; when I pull the fuel tank hose that goes into the petcock just to the right of PRI, I get a good gush of gas.  With it hooked up, though, and the carb drain screws open, no gas comes out of the carbs with the petcock on any position.
The fuel hose from the left side of the petcock to the bottom of the left carb is hooked up and looks happy.
Thoughts?

davipu

the vaccuum line from the carbs to the petcock? did you switch the inlet and the outlet or the outlet and the res lines on the petcock?

Roadstergal

I know I have the petcock fuel lines set correctly.  I'm not sure about the vacuum line to the petcock, though - hum me a couple more bars...

davipu

there's a little vaccuum line that goes from the left carb to the petcock that allows it to open and fuel to flow.

cobalt135

maybe I missed it somewhere but did you have the carbs apart?  Did you try to pull the line going from the frame petcock to the carbs and check for flow in prime position (or any position for that matter) :dunno:  Double check that tank petcock, your bike should match the on/off directon of the tank I posted ('05)

edit to say your tank petcock should be 90 deg. to what the pic shows

Ja, the tank petcock is correct.  I'll check that vacuum line when I'm back home.

Oh, I bet that's it.  I don't remember hooking that puppy back up.  Thanks for the pic!

Roadstergal

OK, this is getting frustrating.

To back up a bit - since all I did was change the main, I left most of the vacuum hoses connected and left the carbs on the bike, turning them so the bottoms faced me.  I dremeled the Phillips heads into flat slots, which let me get them off easily with a flat screwdriver, skipping the impact step.

So, the vacuum hose to the petcock is still routed the same way it was originally.  This picture is from the right side of the bike - the hose comes under the hose to the airbox, over the filter, and down to the lower T just behind the wires.  The upper T goes to the top front of the carbs.

This is the left side, looking in.  If I detach the fuel hose that's going into the carbs, I get a good gush of gas.  If I turn the drain screw on either side, nada - not a drip or a trickle.

This is the top, looking down.

I would like to take this opportunity to say - Arrgh!  WTF?

Jazzzzz

This looks like you have a fuel hose going to the wrong place - it should go to the plastic T fitting on the bottom of the carbs - I can't quite tell from the picture, but it looks like you have it routed to something on the bottom of the left float bowl, which is not where it should go

Roadstergal

Jesus, I feel like a twit.  That was it, thanks...

There is no shame in messing up and needing help...the first time. ;)

There's three kinds of wrenchers:
1 - those that screw up, find the problem, and then proceed to finish.  :P
2 - those that screw up, can't find the problem, ask for help, get it, and then to proceed to finish.
3 - those that do a good job the first time and then are waiting for #1 or #2 above to occur to them.

Let's call it another lesson in "The School of Hard Knocks." Congratulations, you are human!  :thumb:
