I just picked up my new clutch cable from my local dealer on my way into work.  Im sitting here looking at it and am starting to wonder how difficult the install is.  So, how difficult is it?  im not wizard with this kinda stuff but i can hold my own, the only thing im unclear of is how the bottom end of the cable connects to the clutch past where it screws in? any pics, or suggestions would be helpful.  btw its a 1990 gs500e

You don't have the manual, yet, do ya? Not a problem, that's why you have us.

My first suggestion is to slide your new cable in parallel with the old cable, that way you'll have the routing down correctly.
Then loosen all of the adjusters holding the old cable; starting with the handlebar adjuster first (screw in and align the slot), then the crankcase mounted one (screw in all the way, but don't tighten down), then remove the countershaft sprocket cover (remove shift lever first).
You will see that the cable end is retained by a metal tab. Bend that tab up (er, down...I mean, out of the way) and you should be able to finagle that end of the cable out. Sometimes this can be tricky holding the cover and using a small screwdriver to pry the tab (I hold the cover against my knee).
This also might be a good time to clean out the inside of that cover.

Assemble with the new cable in the reverse, starting down with the cover and working your way up. Same thing when you adjust for slack, and be sure to check slack when you turn your handlebars, too. Also, make sure the clutch rod stays pretty level, so that it threads into the hole in the actuator.

Someone tried to move my bike in the garrage and tipped it over, so now i can wait for the new clutch lever to arive.

I did get the clutch cable installed, thanks for the walkthrough.

Old topic, but I have a pretty easy question.  Replacing the clutch cable as it seems like a prety hard pull compared to my YZF.  Does it route over the top of the cross piece tube at the front of the frame under the tank or over the top.  My old cable went over the top of the tube and when I removed the sprocket cover it took some torque so I am guessing it is in the "stock" location.  Just wanting to check to be sure thanks.  :thumb:

Yes, that would be the correct routing.
