So on my evening commute, there was a lot of traffic coming off the Williamsburg Bridge (NYC). I start splitting lanes, which is what I do everyday (save the lectures for another day please, I save at least half an hour on my commute) until I see a policeman on a Harley (police issued). I get scared and merge into traffic hoping he didn't see me.

Suddenly he pulls alongside of me and blips his siren. My heart jumps and I think I'm busted. He looks at me and with a wave of his hand and a wink of an eye he says, "Come on, follow me". He runs his sirens and cuts through the traffic with me in tow. Cars move out of the way and I feel like royalty. Completely magical feeling.

Halfway home and I'm still following him, and we pull alongside each other and he asks, which exit I'm going to. I tell him and with another wink of the eye he gives the bike throttle.

Sadly, my trip came to an end when I reached my exit. With a wave of the hand he waves goodbye. I waved back and gave him the thumbs up. I only wish we had a few minutes to stop and talk. I never even knew his name.

This experience was transcendent and makes me feel so happy to be a rider. I feel there is a tremendous bond between riders and this experience only served to reinforce that notion to me.

That's just about the best thing I've heard all month.
2001 GS500 (no letter!)
Progressive springs; Kat600 shock; 15T front sprocket; Wileyco exhaust w/ Srinath flange; rear fenderectomy; Airbrush hugger; desperately in need of rejetting.

that is really amazing. what a wonderful way to commune with other riders. and to find a cop that is hip to other riders instead of having it out for you. what a treat.

A couple of weeks ago I gave a pair of biker cops the "wave" on Mulholland and the second one returned it.  The first one just looked kind of stiff and uneasy.  Two contrasting attitudes I guess.

Of course I rode on and gave the helmet tap to all other passing bikers   :thumb:

my only experience with harley cops was when i was doing 80kmph in a 50kmph. He was parked and had his radar gun out, and i only saw him at the last minute and thought "damn he caught me" but then HE was the one that waved to me, and not a pull over wave. It was a HELLO wave.  so i waved back and never got pulled over.

 ..i heard your not suppose to do that...specially on canyons...they're there to get "us" (canyon carvers)...i remember riding around here in carbon canyon...stopped at a stoplight.. saw the cop on the oncoming lane stop..give him the wave at launch...he freakin gave me the "look"....it was so odd....like hes lookin for something wrong to bust me...he nodded with a "face"...ill never do that again...

I think it's always a good thing to give the wave, even if it's a cop, harley rider, or squid.  Sometimes I even have the impulse to wave to all the cyclists that train up there.. you know they've got to hate us.  heh.

my ass can't hold that much smoke.

I can believe it..
Its a brotherhood..

Harleys are air cooled and cannot sit idle in traffic..
He knew he had to get moving. Using another air cooled bike as an excuse just legitimized it.

I would have done the same.

I will take issue with your lane splitting though..  ;)

I know its another thread entirely, but I always wave. To 14 year old kids on scooters, to motorcycle cops, to old Harley guys, to everyone on two wheels..

The only time I don't wave is at a biker rally where its just not possible to wave at everyone or your left hand would never touch the handlebars..

In other news, a bank in NYC was robbed by a man dressed as a cop who made his getaway on a stolen NYPD Harley.   Last seen driving recklessly with an accomplice on a Suzuki GS500.   Witnesses have provided a tag number, and the FBI expects to make an arrest today...
On those days when life is a little too much and nothing seems to be going right, I pause for a moment to ponder the wise last words of my grandfather:  "I wonder where the mother bear is?"
