Well I have my first track day in Sept. with Pablo...taking a couple buddies with me as well, we are all gonna trailer up. And well, depending on the experience, if I enjoy myself, I may end up building a track bike over winter....

Granted I may be getting ahead of myself, which I do often you can ask Tony. But Ive already got a bike in mind, (or two ). But this leads me to my main question...

Do you need to have current and legit registration on a track bike, and do you need insurance on said bike??

I have access to either a 99 CBR F4, or a 96 GSXR 750. I will know shortly which will become the track/stunt bike. My sisters BF will be buying the GSXR and whichever he decides to ride daily, the other will become our bastard child, lol. Anyways, thanks toa nyone who can answer my question.

no, and no - track bikes don't necessarily even need to have a title, much less insurance or registration

but  manytrack orginizations will require you to write the Vin on paperwork
and at some races the cops walk thru the pits writing down Vins

might not want to get a 10 finger discount bike

These bikes are legit no problem. Just dont wanna pay for registration/insurance on em if they are gonna be used solely for track.

Willow springs was never a problem They did not check any of that stuff.
Although once, A fan came through the pits, and found his street bike with race numbers. He approach the club president, and They asjed the racer to provide proof, and The racer didn't have any, so I believe the the police were called.

Phoenix ( Firebird) while waiting outside of the gates, the Police checked my buddys bike vin registration, luckly he had it. He argued with the officer stating the bike was not on the street, and was disigned for closed circuit. Therefore it should be except. The oficer stated that you have to provide proof of ownership.

* I race for 7 years, and NEVER had my bikes looked at.

* Provide atleast some paperwork with that vin, and hopefully your name.

* If you are truly worried, The track is not going to check you, but if you are worried about the cops, bring your bike in a van, or enclosed trailer.

people use insurance/salvage bikes for track bikes all the time, just cant take it onto public streets...

Salvage bikes can be used on the street. If its set up as a track/race bike it cant be used on the street because its missing stuff like headlights, etc. Some bikes have non-operational $5 registration instead of paying for the tags as well.

The key with any bike is to get the title if it has it-clear or salvage. If not, then you need to get a bill of sale (a dmv document) to record the transaction and provide proof you are the owner.

One guy I know bought his RR NEW from the dealer and asked not to get a title-they gave him a bill of sale and the DMV has no record of the bike. Yes, it was a race bike.

I have never been asked for proof ownership or show a vin. I guess a GS is not worth the hassle.

as far as I know, if you 'buy back' an insurance write-off you get it with salvage title. they wont sell you a non titled bike. maybe its CA specific, dunno. :dunno:

According to the Auto Fraud seminar I caught at the NYPD Academy in Manhattan a month or so ago, salvage titles can be 'cleaned' (read: swapped for regular, non-salvage titles) with a minimum amount of work -- essentially all it takes is to retitle a vehicle with a salvage title somewhere else that doesn't have reciprocity with your home state.  Some folks don't even bother bringing the vehicle with them when they go get the new title.

I'm not quite sure how that works (I think it has to do with how states can't seem to agree on what 'totalled' means) but it's a big enough problem that they thought an auditorium full of cops and state prosecutors needed to learn about it.

Moral of the story:  Be suspicious of state-hopping registrations.

Its title Swapping. Taking a title to another state to register it as a clean title, then transfer the title back to your home state. Doesnt work in Cali though .

it will probably work as long as the vehicle never goes back to the state that salvaged it....DMV has them new fangled things...COMPUTERS

No it doesn't matter ... the new out of state title will supercede the old title ... I have had it done to my 89. Bought as salvage with CA title, registered in WA and I forgot what it was ... maybe it was straight, then I registered it back in CA and it was a good title. Oh yea that whole process took like 3 years and 5 crashes ...  :lol:  ... atleast 2 of which were paid out by an ins co ... OK fine it was 95-97 ... maybe the state employees have become smarter ... :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  ... yea that will happen and now they can use their computer ...
