I have to ask about extended warranties.

I tried searching but I either get to many results or not enough.

The dealer wants 385 for an extra 4 years. I think that's a pretty good deal, but I don't have a clue how long this bike will last me and such. I did read somewhere in here that the bike sells faster, so that's a good thing.

What do you guys think about your extended warranty? Are you happy with it? Have you actually taken advantage of it?

I've been lucky in my past two cars to have purchased the exteneded warranty and actually saving quite a bit of money for doing it.

I bought an extended warrenty for my car when I bought it used. 2002 satrun sl2 w/46k miles bought in 8/03. The warrenty paid for itself when the input shaft seal started leaking this spring and I have another year to go before the warrenty expires.

Not sure if I would get one for a bike. What all does it cover and how many miles do you get?

I'm not sure what it covers. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow morning and he just told me over the phone. Unfortunately I'm afraid I don't know enough about bikes so when he tells me tomorrow what's covered I won't be able to make an informed decision.

I think bikes have a much shorter half life than cars.

The extended warranty is 4 years unlimited miles.  Covers everything the factory warranty covers.  What my dealer told me was that it would help me sell the bike faster down the road haveing the extended warranty but because of the durablility of the GS I probally would not use it.  Not sure if he was BS'ing me or not about the durablility.

if it's the same as manufacturer's warranty, then 400 bucks is worth it.....but normaly (for the car at least) the extended warranties from the third parties are a waste of money

When I collected my '03 new from the dealer, it had like most bikes in UK a two-year warranty. The sales guy was giving me a speil about extending the warranty for a further two or three years for a sum that I have forgotten but seemed reasonable but only if I did it within six months of purchase. The mechanic who was just finishing prepping the bike was behind him, pulled a face, shook his head and mouthed "You won't need that mate"

I hope he was right, the only problem I had during the warranty was an electrical one after 22/34 months which they instantly fixed.

That's not a bad deal. That will give me a chance to learn about the bike and see how difficult it would be to work. I know my car and I've done a lot of work to it and I didn't know anything before hand. That might be a good option.

I would rather have the money to put toward good gear instead of the warranty. Not that I wouldn't have gotten the same gear, but it does help.

I doubt he was bs'ing you. I would think he would try to sell as many of those as possible.
