Sorry guys, this is mostly likely a noob question, but I just got the bike a couple days ago and the day after I bought it I had to go on vacation.  Although I didn't see anything to see how much gas is left.

Come on guys, I know it sounds stupid, but a quick answer would be greatly appreciated.

Go to the gas station and fill it up.  Put the petcock to the on position (NOT Prime, NOT Reserve).  You can expect anywhere from 130-150 miles before you'll need to switch over to reserve depending on how you're riding it.  The trip odometer is your best friend. Get used to reseting it at each fill-up and make sure the petcock is back to the right position.  Once on reserve you can probably expect another 40 miles but I don't wait around.  Find a gas station

You usually can get about 150 -200 miles per tank.  I usually set the tripometer when I fill up.  Sorry no gauge or you can subtract from you odometer.  And once you get used to the feel of the bike you will notice that the bike gets a little light when the gas gets lower.    ;)

Ahh, thanks a lot guys, so there is no gauge for gas.  I'll be using that trip button at the gas station.

On my 2004 GS500F, I can typically get around 240 miles before having to hit Reserve. I've run out of gas 4 times; 242, 238, 212, and 193. The 193 was a batch of bad gas I think, because the gas throew the bike into all sorts of fits until it was gone..then I run some dry gas through and it was great again.

But if you have an 04 "F", get gas before 200 miles just in case. And since there is no gas gauge, obviously..use the trip meter to plan your gas station fill ups. I think the older GS's have smaller tanks than the "F" models. :thumb:

I hit 200 miles I usually fill her back up.  I have never had to put mine on reserve yet.  I think I have it has something like a 5.3 gallon tank?  At around 200 miles it has never taken 4 gallon of gas to fill her back up.

Bumping 4 minutes after you post in the middle of the night is a bit impatient...

Anyway, the trip meter is your friend. Also, when i switch to reserve it always looks like there is more than a gallon of fuel in the tank, so don't use that as your absolute gauge. Trust the tripmeter.

dablinkboston

Jeesh, calm down.  I said that because I saw that 4 or 5 people had viewed the topic, but didn't post and I thought it was because it sounded too simple(noobish) of a question and so I said that.....and it worked, people repied.  Again, thanks for your help all.

for my 04 i get about 120 before hitting reserve. i usually but about 2.6 gals in there. so i'm thinking that something is screwed up since my take is suppose to hold 5.3 gals. my driving style varys, but i don't think it would mess it up that much.

RVertigo

Yeah...  2.6 is very little gas.  I think the CA model has a smaller tank or something, but it's not that small.

Be sure to light a match - it's dark in there.

I was thinking that...  But, you never know...  People have done it.

...
you know, when I used to ride at 60/65mph, I would get 185mpg average.
My bike is a gs500F 2005 in california (smaller tank?)

Now I get around 165/173mpg (riding at 75mph average).

Funny thing is, eveytime I try to 'fill her up', I can never pour more than 3.5 gallons on the tank.
Caturday yet?

Do you coast downhill all of the time?

RVertigo

I can usually get about 4 gallons in at 200 miles...   :dunno:

I swear I read somewhere that the Cali tank was smaller...  :dunno:

Just couldn't let it slide huh?

I want a GS that gets 185 MPG!  That would RULE!

ajgs500

I think your are right about the Cali tanks, RVertigo.
