So when I bought my bike the guy who had it never registered it, nor did he apply for a title only. I have the original title (Ohio) with his name on the back and what not, a vin check (from the state of CT signed by a trooper) and a bill of sale (CT) from him to me. Can't call him or write him as I don't have his complete address or phone number. How much trouble do you think the NY DMV is gonna give me? Yuck...

You should be fine with that much documentation.

Yea I had a similar experience ... Ct title signed into next guy's name, who Lived in MD and signed it to me ... a CT title can be done 3 times ... now a SC title can be done 2 times like this ... but NC said I cannot skip the step of registering by the previous owner so I have to get it registered and titled to him and he should sign it to me ... like WTF ... CT title allows for the second transfer without re title ... and NC dosn't allow that so I was screwed ... anyway  I sold it to an SC guy (drifter8844) who just went to DMV and had it titled ... So I say "Up yours NC..." NY might try to screw ya the same way ...

Just as I thought a NIGHTMARE!!!! The original guy signed it in the wrong place and scribbled out his name then wrote the other guys name and because of that...I will have to try to track down the original owner (who sold it in 1994!!! thats 11 years ago!!!) and have him get a replacement title in his name and sign it over to me.  :guns: Stupid NY Motor Vehicle!!!  I have to send him certified letters to his old address listed on the title and wait for it to be returned undelieverable then bring it back and wait 5 years while they investigate it and then they will issue me a title....

Would it be any easier for you to try to title the bike in CT and then transfer that title to NY before registering?

Yea Try CT ... CT had titles that have 3 transfers allowed ... may be much more compliant ... SC was the same way ...

Well previous owner (one that sold it to you) can try it if he was a CT resi. And some states dont need the bike in front of them to register it ... NC is one, as is SC, so I't hit someone in SC to do it if CT doesn't pan out.

And GA is also the most lenient state in the freaking world ... no need for bike to be there and I dont think hey'd even take a second look at that title ...

if all that doesn't work, it sux, but you might want to try getting a titled frame?  Probably isn't an option for a student though.  Good luck.

By registration, you mean getting a plate and tabs?  I wonder what they do for titled bikes with no tabs (e.g. collectable bikes, track or dirt bikes).  If that way is easier, you could say that the bike hadn't been registered because it was being used off-road or for display only.  Then, it may need an inspection to become registered again with plate and tabs (same as any offroad bike that you are making street-legal).  I don't see why titling a vehicle should need to be tied to a license plate.  I have titled boats, that have sat in the backyard with expired boat license for a few years, but they're still titled to me just the same.

Yea man, I dont see why having a NC licence is a requirement either for getting a vehicle titled/registered ... but the pricks at the dmv want to see that. They let me register a Truck and a bike, then they decided its time to screw me ...

I can't get a new title so I can't get a plate for it...My lil bro's best friends mom works at the post office...I'm gonna see if she'll just stamp my letters undeliverable..then go to another DMV office and see if they'll register me...i just wanna be able to go for a damn ride before I have to go back to school in 3 weeks....otherwise..i'm cancelling the insurance I just bought and waiting till next year to register but I'll keep trying to get the title:( Good thing my driveway is a paved 2 mile rd...at least I can go up and down that....

Everything in New York State is a nightmare. Did you try calling the DMV, sometimes they can give helpful advice. Wait a minute, forget I mentioned that, because we both know the people at DMV aren't there to help.  

I was at DMV for two hours today, they were the ones that said I had to send certified letters to a non existant address....I looked the guy up (good thing i'm good at this stuff) and I found him on the net so I have his new address and phone number I think. But do I really wanna get into that? It takes 45 days for a new title to be issued and then for him to have it notarized and sent back to me..that'll be another week..considering I'm only here for 21 more days thats not gonna be happening....I checked the Ohio DMV and the title is still registered as active under his name but doesn't give his current address....Should I just give up on trying to get it done before I go??  :dunno:

Well You can call him and tell him you're sending him a duplicate of the title and have him sign it ... in the right location etc and have it send it to ya ... Then call the OH DMV and say you need duplicate title ... easy. Wont take a 45 day thing ... under a week ... I did it for CA last year. My stupid friend isn't doing it for TN ... but I'll get him to in a bit.

Not quite sure I understand what you're saying Srinath...send him a photocopy of the title? I wonder if I did that, got a copy of his drivers license and a statement stating that I own the bike like a bill of sale...if that would be enough.....Or would they need an official title? I wish NY wasn't  so awful

OK I was saying ... you should call him and tell him that the OH dmv will send him a title copy ... and he should it send to you. Then get OH DMV to make a duplicate title and send to him. The reason is ... most people that sold a bike 11 years ago will not run to the dmv for that bike ... and that will make your delay much worse. If all he has to do is sign it and send to ya ... much easier and hence he will do it sooner. It can be done over the phone ... so might as well do it. Helps speed it up.
