i lost a screw at the track - it vibrated loose, i did not notice until i got home (left when viewing picture, right side of fairing).

how do i replace it?

i tried to look at the remaining one but i can't get my hand in there.

should be able to find a phillips screw that will work close enough for you.

Get your hand in there??...huh ;)are we talking about the same screws here? The black ones holding the windshield?....it just screws in from the outside. Just take the other one out from the other side and hit the hardware store...dont know if you'll find ones exactly like it, they have a fairly low profile head with a lip right on em.

For that, just get an OE replacement from the dealer.  Even with a 300% markup, it won't be much.

ginoe

to be honest, i am afraid to remove the other one  :o

when i peer into the empty hole where the other screw fell out, it's all smooth inside the plastic. no grooves for the screw to bite into or where the screw 'bit' into.

i'm thinking, maybe there was a screw 'clip' that also vibrated loose too (see pic)

i should just overcome my fears and just un-screw the remaining one to see how it holds together.

anyone out there remove these screws?

i dig pics, it just makes it easier than trying to write-up an explanation to help picture it in your mind...

Trust the Force.  Get a new screw and screw it in.

its some cheapy plastic screw, i can send you some if you want.... I work at a dealer and yes they are extremely overpriced, seems your missing the rubber piece with the nut also, btw those plastic screws are useless they arent actually fastened into something, the plastic screw sits in the rubber holder and the holder rests in that hole in your fairing attatched to nothing, *shrug* i leave mine out

ginoe

ahhhhh - i understand the concept now, the rubber grommet will hold the plastics together as it expands when the screw is in it.

i need to get the part because the fairing vibrates like hell when i get the bike redlined in the straights.

i can pick up a few at a local m/c shop up the road from me - thanks for the offer 'bro'  :thumb:

when i removed the mirrors for trackday, i took them out of B which also removes the mount for the mirror arm. next time i will remove the mirror arm A so the mount will remain, keeping the fairing bolted together for less vibration.

the missing screw/grommet vibrated out of C (i updated the pic in my 1st post).

Okay, so search works, but this doesn't fully answer my question...

I noticed the left-side screw described in this post (at position "C") was missing, and didn't think much of it.  I assumed it held the windshield down, and seeing as the windshield wasn't loose I temporarily gave it amiss.  But...I took a look at the other screw and it looked loose, so I gave it a few turns to tighten it up (didn't want to lose both), and it just turned freely.  I grabbed it with my fingers and pulled the screw and the rubber sleeve right out.   :?

So...is there supposed to be a nut on the other side that compresses the sleeve so that it expands outward?  (if so, mine is missing) Or: Is the screw itself supposed to expand the sleeve enough to keep it in place? (if so, it doesn't seem to expand sufficiently to do anything useful).

Doesn't seem to be an urgent problem, but I'm starting to have disturbing visions of the windshield coming off at 80mph.  :o

ginoe

here is a crude drawing of what i said before - when you tighten the screw into the grommet, it will scrunch up the rubber making it thicker and it will expand in the hole making the plastics stay together.

btw - i noticed this is the same way the bar ends work too.

I have noticed this on my F also. My windscreen sometimes resonates (vibrates at certain rpms while warming up. I had tried to tighten those screws but they just spin freely no matter what I do. So I left it alone.

P.S. Hey '04gs500f can you hook me up with a part maybe? If you see this. I might PM you.

So...any suggestions on how to tighten the screw without letting the grommet just spin on the screw?  I know...pilers....but I'm not a very good contortionist.  I'll have to look again, but it didn't appear easy to get to the back of the screw, or I'd set a pair of locking pliers on the back.

I still have to get a replacement for the missing screw/grommet.  :(

ginoe

try this:

have the rubber grommet in hand, using a screwdriver - screw in the screw until you can see/feel the grommet being squished/widened.

eye-ball it to get the grommet fat enough to squeeze into the fairing hole, it will probably not spin inside the hole so you can continue to tighten the screw.

good luck  :thumb:

btw- that screw/grommet cost me about $5 at the dealer  :x

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if these get attached at the factory, or is this part of the "dealer setup" that I paid like a million dollars for?  I can only assume that these weren't tightened correctly if one fell out and I can pull out the other one with my fingers, so I expect I can get them to float me another screw...not that the $5 is that important, but it's the principle of the thing.

rritterson

careful. those screws strip more easily than a bad analogy I won't make...

they are plastic and really soft, so you can't tighten them very much. Just about everyone sells replacement screws that fit, and you can even get anodized grommets and screws in every imaginable color.

calamari

after I lost my 1st screw due to vibration on my 2005 F, I got into the habit of tightening all the screws I can find on the bike every 2 weeks or so.

btw, I posted about the problem here too, and somebody suggested to take it to the dealer and I did... and I got a screw for free  8)  mmm, no wait ... that's not what I meant  :o

Now I understand why RG spends so much time at the dealership.

Roadstergal

Yeah, I'm still waiting for my free one...  :P

All screws and bolts get tightened when I do the oil change.  That seems to work.
