I'm sure someone must have had this problem...

Anyone ever driving along and suddenly the bike starts to put-put like there's a gas-starvation problem?  And then when you pull the bike to the side of the road the engine stops turning.

I look in the tank and can see plenty of gas.  I try turning it over and can just hear the starter motor going and going.  Turn the petcock from ON to PRI, and it starts up right away and runs great?

Anyway, I'm sure this happened to someone?  What's the likely problem?

I should also mention that the bike sat in a garage for a couple years unused prior to my purchase.  So far I've only changed the gas (to 89 octane stuff), did an oil and filter change (during the process of replacing the crank oil seal and gasket on the right side of the engine cause it was leaking oil), and today lubed the chain (went out and bought that PJ1 Blue Label stuff on someone's suggestion - good stuff I think).

that happens to me when im low on gas just switch it to reserve and refuel it soon you have around 1 gallon left I know it looks lie it has plenty but it has like 1 gallon left when it does that. Oh yea never leave the bike on PRI because it will leak all the fuel out.

Really?  I'll have to go out again, wait for the problem again, and then see if I can get it to start on the RES setting.

Thanks by the way.

Switching to RES is useful if the engine hasn't died yet.  Once it has died, go ahead and switch to PRI.  Once the engine has started again, you can switch back to RES.
You cannot escape our master plan!

And then go to the gas station

You were right!  It was because of the low fuel.

Thanks again.
