 Is it possible to work on the cam chain tensioner without removing carbs.

With some patience it is yes. I once did it, but i had to saw the end off the allen wrench to reach in. If you take off the tensioner, remember to put in a new gasket.

On the other hand, popping the carbs isn't that much work, and it'll give you a comfortable space to work.

Before you put the tensioner back on there's an easy way to hold the tension. I used a short piece from a metal yard rake tine. Just stick it in there and wind. Once it's tight tilt the piece of tine to the edge and lock it in one of the slots. Now you're all set to reattach it to the engine. After it's bolted down simply remove the homemade tool and you're ready to go.

thanks Ill give it a go. The tine tip sounds good. I dont want to pull the carbs as the bike is running as sweet as a nut  apart from the kerdank....kerdank....kerdank... which I think is because the tensioner is shot and if I take the carbs off I just know I will not get her back to as she is now. Ill try it without first and if I fail then............
