after i layed down my bike i had to replace my handle bars, and tank. i thought everything was fine, casue i had the frame sliders that protect the engine. so iam riding it the other day, i hop onto the freeway and the thing sputters and dies on me. now the only way it works is when i set the fuel knob on pri. if i put it in the on position it runs for 1 min and as soon as i go to drive it around it starts to die again. anyone have an idea what the problem is????

Most likely you have the hoses from the frame mounted petcock hooked up wrong - mainly the one that is supposed to go to the vacuum tap.  Otherwise it could be the diaphragm in the frame mounted petcock - but I would bet on the hoses hooked up wrong.

i didnt even touch the wires, but tis wierd. it works fine when its on pri. like no problem at all, i can redline it and top it out. the fuel tank did get hit, do you think that might have messed up the wires?? could it be a more serious problem.

How did you replace your tank without touching any hoses?

Kerry

If you made it TO the freeway with the switch in the "on" position then the "on" position must have been working OK up to that point.  (Do you live less than a minute from the freeway?)

You haven't mentioned whether your tank is FULL of gas.  Anything less than FULL gets a subjective, "Well, it looks like it has plenty of gas."  Believe me ... I've been there, done that. :x

i did not replace the tank yet, i will have to check if any hoses are pinched. No i was riding for a while, and then it just went crazy. You know it feels like the pri. position is now the on position, and the on position was like the res tank and thats why i was able to ride around on it but then eventually died. but i dont get how that could happen. ANd yes the first thing i did was check the gas to see if i had any, then i changed the spark plugs. I think it has to be a gas issue cause when its in pri. i can ride all day no problems at all. its really weird...anyone else have any ideas??

had a petcock like that, i set it slightly away from on and it worked fine, that was the way it was when i bought it, but changed it as it got irritating
I never said a thing, it was only a rumour

so its prob just the petcock then? prob. got messed up after i crashed the bike. any thing else you guys think could be wrong???

StevenE

Your petcock has a vacuum operated valve. When you put the petcock on PRI, you bypass that valve. So I think the valve operation is the problem. Is the vacuum tube still connected to the back of the petcock? Other side connected with the carbs? Is it pinched?

Your symptoms point to one (or more) of the following problems;

Vacuum hose pulled off of left carb.
Vacuum hose pulled off of rear of petcock.
Damaged and leaking vacuum hose.
Damaged or clogged vacuum activated valve in petcock.

I reckon your vaccum hose was probably knocked loose in your crash and finally fell off at one end while on the freeway.
