Hey guys,
I am relatively new to the GStwin scene, and my bike has a few issues.
Nothing major, mostly bodywork, mechanically it'r pretty good so far. However, I was looking over the front end and I noticed a small section of the bottom of the neck on the front side. it's about 1\2-3\4" wide, basically the height of the lower ring. Is this a common problem or is my bike basically F'd? :x
I can't seem to get the pics loaded, so if you want to see it, email me and I will send it to you. Jeffersonjbryant@yahoo.com

Could you clean that area and see what is underneath the grime?

Doesn't look serious to my admittedly untrained eye, though...

Looks like the steering stop is broken off.
Common sense in not very common.

Ok, that makes sense, since the bike was wrecked in 3 of '90, resulting in a salvage title which has since been inspected and made a rebuilt title. It has about 10,000 miles on it, can't imaging those were all between 8-89 to 3-90, would you ride it?

Sure. Why not? You probably would never attempt to do a 360 spin of the steering column anyway.  :)

Good call Dgyver.  :thumb:

If it really bugged you, a welder friend and $.05 worth of steel would put it right. A little sanding, priming and painting later, ta-da!

The trend here is entropy

I have never seen one missing that much material. Must have been an early model before any cutbacks in production to meet new quotas. Later model stops look like they are held on with bubble gum.

it looks to me as if it has gone all the way to the race itself, the entire thickness of the neck. It looks as if it has had a lot of miles on it since this happened, but I just want to be sure its ok.

I would take it to a reputable bike shop or a auto fab shop and get a mechanics opinion since he could see it in person... might not hurt to get a piece welded over that.
'96 GS500E - Boy, does it ever run!!!

its just a busted OFF steering stop. dont even think thats the steering lock stop. other then tapping the tank with the handle bars now and then, it wont hurt anything to leave it alone.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
Ride Hard...or go home.

The point of the steering lock is that if you crash the bars won't crush your hand against the tank.
You could proberbly get a mechanics to weld a stop in place.
