Weird throttle response problem.......

Hey guys, I currently have a 97 GS500 and I've decided that I want to get to the bottom of a problem that has caused me to not be able to ride for quite some time now.

I had recently rebuilt and rejetted the carbs, and then the bike had been running fine (but only when the fuel lever was turned to PRI, otherwise the bike would cut out after a few minutes of riding) until this problem arose. One night after having parked it, I got on and it gave me a lot of trouble starting. Finally, once I got it started, I saw that no matter how I twisted the throttle and revved the engine, the RPM gauge did not go up at all. I could deal with that.....but that's not really the problem. The throttle is very weird now......like, when I try to give it a quick blip from the idle position, it just bogs. In order to rev the engine smoothly, I have to apply a very slow, constant roll. Any sudden movements of the throttle just causes the engine to bog after a very short response.

Could ANYONE help me out with what might be wrong here? I'm assuming it's a carbeuration problem......but I suck at these kinds of things. Thanks guys!

I guess what I've written so far might be a little vague. If anyone would benefit from my clarification of anything, please say so.

Thanks again........

fuel starvation? just wait until one of the people who actually know what they are talking about to post.

okay, did you fix your initial problem? Does the bike run on ON or RES now?

I don't suspect fuel starvation personally, because that would prevent it from getting to high RPMs period. Are your floats set to the right height?

what problem lead to your rebuilding and rejetting the carbs?

how long was it "running fine" before it started with the throttle problems?

after the "one night" when it went bad, how often did you ride it?
(ie-thinking maybe they are two separate things and maybe someone dropped your bike and picked it back up, causing it to have starting and running problems).

"what problem lead to your rebuilding and rejetting the carbs?"

The guy I bought it from had rejetted and used the wrong main/needle jets and the bike wouldn't run.

"how long was it "running fine" before it started with the throttle problems?"

It was "running fine", meaning it was running normally when on PRI for probably close to a month before this problem arose.

"after the "one night" when it went bad, how often did you ride it?"

As it is right now, since that one night, I haven't ridden it at all, except for taking it home that night. It's almost impossible to ride, the way it responds.

And no, I hadn't fixed the ON and PRI problem before this problem occured. It didn't seem very urgent to me, seeing that it ran fine in PRI.

Check your vaccum line for GAS  :dunno:  That was a prob on mine.. if so plug both ends w/ screws and try running it on PRIME again.

I'm not sure about the fuel problems, but I might be able to solve the tach problem.   Look at the front of the engine, above the exhaust headers near the head.  Check to make sure that the end of the tach cable is screwed into the engine.  Mine tends to unscrew itself periodically.  Just clean it up a bit and screw it back in.

I might also add that, unless you didn't put the fuel lines back together right after the rejet, running only on PRI is definitely not "running fine".

You may have a slide lifting too fast ... or a huge ass rip in the diaphragm ... OK there may be more screwed up ... but the symptoms are vague ... wrong needles ... Jet kit needles ??? then you corrected it ... how ??? see too many questions ... I can rejet/fix it if you wanna send it over ... $40 for rejet, $20 for tropubleshoot - whihc is free with rejet (usually unless you have something I dont obviously see ... BTW I have never not obviously seen somehting busted ... but ask the guys that get stuff back from me ...) Anyway ... if you need me to ... send me PM and I'll send you address ...
