i finally got my 92 GS500E to start..but now i'm hearing what seems to be "puff" of air coming from the front ..

keep in mind that I am totally new to this...but i'm also not ignorant and i do search before asking

it could possibly be your header pipes are not tightened down all the way.  check those and see if it is the problem.

Roadstergal

Isolate where it's coming from by feeling with your hands.  Do this when the bike is still cold. ;)

i forgot to mention that there is a whisp of smoke and a bit of a smell coming from the header area...so i will check the bolts and respond back...thanks

terv

ok the headers did need some tightening, not much maybe 2 or 3 turns on 2 of the bolts. the sound i described was still present but not until the motor warmed up and it sounded more like an electrical/air combination.

When checking around i noticed that the right spark plug wire was not attached to the inside of the wire,is it possible that i'm hearing something from this since it wouldn't be firing correctly?

Yes. Did you put the cap back on tightly, and did the sound go away?

i might have to start a new thread...yes i did get the cap on tight and no the sound didn't go away,i took the bike out of the garage and worked on it outside to get better lighting and the sound is coming from the right side carb where it meets the motor, kind of like pushes it out.As it does this there is a great amount of power loss, alomost like it builds up a ball of energy and expels it only to start over.

2) when i have the throttle twisted a little and the choke on about half way the bike will idle...fine as long as it stays above 2,000 rpm's...any deviation and it shuts off

now i know for a fact that the carbs could use a good overhauling, but to be honest i do not feel comfortable doing this myself, and i'm starting to think that this is my biggest culprit.if at any point you guys want to suggest to toss it over the closest cliff side go ahead....i just might have to agree :x  :dunno:

don't do that - sell me the bike for $50, I'll come get it

seriously though, working on the carbs isn't as bad as it looks, it's mostly just a pain in the butt of trial and error.  easy, but takes a while until you're used to doing it

Hey Zanesville !!! SWEET! I go there all the time :) My GF is from there  :thumb:

I say go ahead and clean the carbs.. Its not hard at all.. read up on it in some of the posts on here and take em apart carefully  :thumb:  Buy some good carb cleaner (suzki cleaner is bad a$$) Then have at it!

It also sounds like there may be a prob. where the carb attaches to the engine. you should take the tank and airbox off, to get a better view of whats going on in there. Then its just 2 more screws after that and youve got the carbs off

Just be sure to pay close attention when taking everything apart ( there are some small a$$ pieces in there )

I would leave the top (black ends) alone.. not much dirt in there. If comfortable, take that end apart to inspect for problems but watch the  two small gaskets in there !!

Mostly just take off the bottoms "bowls" and clean everything you can see.. inside and out :) Remove each screw "jet" and inspect and clean.

There are tons of better posts on here to tell you exactly what to do.. just use the search function search: "clean carbs"

I wont be back out to Z-Ville for a month or so but I can help ya then   :thumb:

The carb is loose! It's suckin' air! This should be as simple as tightening the screw that holds the carb in the carb boot!

Like Scratch said.

Take a propane torch (unlit), open the valve and move it around where the carburetors meet the engine.  If the engine revvs-up, then there's an air leak there.  You can also just spray WD40 around there and see.
You cannot escape our master plan!
