We were riding sunday on some back roads in pittsburgh, myself gs500f, my buddy and his fz6 and his brothers 05 HD. We were going about 25-30 mph around the bend. He was in the lead and hit a nice size rock on the front tire and went down hard and broke his right leg. I saw the whole thing happen. It was a real eye opener. Please be careful out there. By the way 6,000 dallars in damages, it could of been a lot worse.

that sucks. but casually remind him that for less than the dammages he can get a new gs.

Just shows how easy it is to eat it even if you're not doing anything legally wrong, how big was the rock approximately?

The rock was about a size of a baseball and there were two of them side by side.

Could he have avoided them? Where was he looking? Was it a blind turn?

Hope he heals up well.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

I'm stuck with shyte gear myself, after spending the majority of my money on the bike I don't really have the money left for a nice jacket, pants or gloves, leather without any armour and denim will have to do till I get another paycheck  :dunno: But I doubt he could have prevented breaking his leg even if he had the best gear out there, not really a wound that armour or leather could have prevented, unless he wanted to get some nice high armoured boots, but even then I dunno if they'd prevent anything like a fracture or a breakage.

A good armoroed jacket doesn't have to cost a lot of money. You can get Fieldsheer Mach 1 jackets on eBay for ~$75. That's a damned good armored mesh jacket. I just got a Fieldsheer Mach 3 on eBay for $105 shipped. That's a $140 jacket.

You're right, he probably couldn't have prevented breaking his leg, but if you go down, you usually get scraped up pretty badly if you wern't wearing gear. Road rash isn't pleasant either.

Also, it gives me a chance to rant about the necessity of gear.

My Mach 1 went down in a wreck a few months ago, ripped apart the outer mesh and wore the padding down a little ways on the right sleeve, busted a few top-layer seams (one layer of fabric popped up, that's all) and fused one of the sleeve straps together, and it still works great (although it isn't pretty). The armor did a great job of protecting most of me. I didn't have any bruises or broken bones, although I did collapse a lung. No big deal though!

Heh yeah... no big deal  :?  I'm looking at them now and some seem to have quite a loose fit, how are the mach 1s and 3s pretty close on a average frame or pretty loose?

My father has an "average" body type (although he says he is a little big in the gut). He wears a 42 size Mach 1, and although it fits a little tight in the gut, it is perfect.

Funny how many people I see riding in shorts,  tank tops and flip-flops. Oh, and no helmet.

Here's to a quick recovery!

What I think is funny is when I see those sportbike riders riding around in the Texas heat without a helmet, but having one strapped to the back of their bike.

They plan on putting it on right as they start to go down.
