I was given a DVD player because it no longer reads discs. It is just a walmart cheapie player, and I don't even need it at all. I took it for the adventure of learning how to work on it   I get a kick out of that. I am a computer technician by trade, so I don't see any reason this would be too much of a stretch.

Has anyone here done any repairs on DVD players/Playstations/etc? I've done some research and I think it might be the laser. It's been cleaned and that did not help.

Has anyone ever replaced a laser in a device like this before? Is it difficult, costly? where did you get the parts? Are they generally standard or will it be too difficult to find?

And yes, I know it isn't worth fixing the stupid thing for my own use. A new one is like $40.  :lol: . But for the pursuit of knowledge, I think it's an interesting thing to do.  

laser is usually cost as much as replacing the dvd player.  I have repaired a few and found that it is usually a laser emmitter adjustment thats out.  if you look at the laser head you should see 2 screws 90* apart,  these asre used to aim the laser.  as it the bushings were it gets out of aim,  make small adjustments to the screws and record what you did so you can return it to its orginal spot and start over if need be (this also works on cd players, and pc dvd burners)

So what you are saying is, perhaps the laser is just out of adjustment rather than being totally burnt out? I'll check into it and take your advice, thanks

yup i have seen that happen before.. easy fix,
