In the middle of trying to replace my fork seals and the damper allen bolt is just spinning inside the lower part of the fork.  What to do?

Kerry

I used my version of the tool (described in the thread linked to by davipu) again yesterday.  I didn't want to go into the house to for a 5/8" socket, and I didn't want to use the slips-off-every-time crescent wrench method, so I rooted through my metric socket set.

Turns out that the 24mm socket is a very close match, and works just fine.  As for my one-man-loosening arrangement, see the photo below.  I ...
    * Clamped the short side of an 8mm Allen wrench in a vise (protected from the vise jaws by a folded-up paper towel)
    * Lowered the fork onto the wrench
    * Lowered my tool into the fork
    * Applied the 24mm socket[/list:u]... and POOF!  It loosened up without too much effort.

I am in Anderson if you need some help also. Did we meet at Fazoli's in Anderson a couple months ago?

sri,
wheel came out fine, ended up using the vice and cardboard tecnique.  It took quite a few tries to get it just right.  Used the bead sealer on it and it held at 60.  about to put it back on the bike some time after class tomorrow.

starwalt,
nah, wasn't me.

The Buddha

Yea ... The old vice and cardboard. Our old wheels react well to that, try it on a new GSXR wheel ... with potato chip walls and you'll break it ... like a potato chip ... My brother and I did it to a 84 FJ600 wheel ... and we ended up hitting with a mallet ... it worked fine ... and better yet ... not 1 blow was even visible as a mark on that wheel ... we couldn't even spot where the bend was after we wiped off the rubber from the mallet ...
Cool.

It was back in 1999 when we hocked it in CA for $1000 (exactly what he paid for it 4 years earlier ... but it had a parts bike included when we sold, and 20K more miles 13K to 33 K)

Need instruction on how to make this home made damper bolt tool

:icon_rolleyes:
Davipu link does not work!

starwalt

You have to fiddle with old links to get the topic to show up....

HERE is the link.

Notice the difference in the URL. I changed the following:

to this

Replace "forum" with "gsboard", "viewtopic" with index, and "t" with "topic".

You are welcome in advance! I needed to track this down also.
