New rider makes dumb mistake - Story at 11

So, I finally got to wrench on my bike today...  the problem is that it wasn't exactly planned or what I had in mind.

As lunchtime rolled around today I jumped on the gs, started it up and pulled off.  Unfortunately the disc lock was still on the front rotor where I'd placed it this morning.  One embarrassing lurch later I got off the bike and reached over to unlock it.  The key wouldnt budge, so I took a closer look and found that the force from the wheel had bent the piston that pushes in and retracts to 'lock' and 'unlock' the rotor.

The key/locking mechanism was still in working order from what I could tell, but the piston was bent at about a 3-5 degree angle which was keeping it from retracting back (so even if I 'unlocked' the lock, the piston was wedged shut).

After very ineffectively monkeying like a dummy with tools (hammer, chisel, some pliers, 3 flathead screwdrivers).... I decided to take the advice of a guy in the metal shop where I work.  One of the engineers helped me lug the gs with its front wheel on a dolley (I do *not* reccommend that method for moving a motorcycle with a locked front wheel), and then we forklifted it (me on the gs, the gs on a wooden pallet, the pallet on a forklift) up into the warehouse.  After almost dumping it off the side (4.5 ft down = no more gs) once or twice, we got it off the pallet.

I then fetched an air pressure powered grinder from the metal shop (along with some gloves and goggles) and spent about 15 min cutting through the bent metal piston.   I could have probably cut through in 3-5 min, but I wanted to make sure that I didn't nick anything on the gs or on my hands/fingers.

So, here I am with a new $23 paperweight.  I lucked out this time.  I'm not ever going to travel away from home with a disc lock again, lest I get stranded somewhere.

Get a little cord that attaches to the lock...  Then attach the other end to the handlebars.

It'll remind you not to ride away with it on there.

But, I feel your pain...  I don't have a disc lock because I KNOW I'd forget to take it off.

I don't get the bit about fork lifting the gs. Why didn't you just remove the front wheel?

Or!  Or. . . Or. . . Or you could take a little refrigerator magnet and keep it stuck to your disk lock and when you put the disk lock on your bike, you take the magnet off and stick it to your ignition.

Lunch bell rings, you skip outside, go to put your key in and. . . wooops!  Can't.  There is a magnet over the key hole.  Why?  Disk lock!  Oh. Lucy!

Unless some kids happen by and steal your magnet ... then boom ... you have no magnet and no running bike ...
Cool.

You a-hole!  You know perfectly well that a kid isn't going to steal a magnet.  Can't you just let me have my moment?  Is it a good idea, in and of itself?????

or or or or get a disc lock with a motion censor alarm on   I'm guilty of that one, fired mine up, clicked in gear, sped off, then fell off, disc lock attached and a bruised ego, and kneecap, from saving the tank from been dinted
I never said a thing, it was only a rumour
